Giveaway Day!

I am quite excited to participate in the Giveaway Day at Sew, Mama, Sew! Up for grabs is a brand new Fons & Porter Binding Tool and two fat quarters of some American Jane fabric! I am a HUGE fan of my binding tool… as you can read here.

To enter, leave an answer to this question: What is your favorite gift you ever gave someone for the holidays? Mine would have to be a tie between a guitar stand and a Christmas quilt. The guitar stand I made (with significant help from my dad!) for my husband…the first time I dated him(!) and the quilt I made for my parents. The quilt was made back in 1997 when photo transfers to fabric were not at all easy like they are now. I was 16 and my sister was ten. My sister and I snuck the sewing machine away and spent the weekend with my grandparents.  I selected our favorite holiday photos for the blocks. I had the squares all made and stashed all over my bedroom- they had to dry since I used a liquid to transfer the photocopies to fabric. My grandmother helped us with the sashing, quilting and binding.

While the fabric was a cheapy from Walmart and my sewing ability wasn’t all that great, I think it’s a cool quilt.

The photo on the bottom left is of me opening up my Cabbage Patch Kid- purchased for me during the Cabbage Patch craze of 1983. I love the expression on my face.  And, yes, I still have that doll! The bottom right is my sister and her awful neat guitar. One day I decided I’d heard her sing Garth Brooks off key one too many times… so I chucked it down the stairs. She is 22 now and still gives me crap about that one!

I am going to assume that everyone owned a (now embarrassing) pair of giant glasses that covered half of your face. Mine were even pink!

We boxed the quilt up with a big baggie of pennies to confuse our parents. The quilt was a total surprise for my parents and a memory I love thinking about.

I am excited to read your answers! I’ll choose a random answer on Sunday, December 7th. I will ship internationally if needed. Good luck!

What a nice giveaway! My favorite gift I’ve given was a painting I had done of our daughter that I gave to my husband. She was in a wooden boat cradle that he built for her and it was a total surprise to him.

What a great giveaway! My favorite gift was the picture book that my boyfriend and I wrote and made last year for his (then) 4.5 year old nephew. We incorporated all of his nephew’s favorite obsessions from dinosaurs to pirates to Santa and made him the hero of the story. It was great and he absolutely loved it!

i love giving quilts…they seem to be well received.

Oooh! Nice giveaway! My favorite kind of gifts is tickets to go see a show with the person to which I’m giving the gift… I find that you often forget what object you received but you remember having a nice evening out with a friend or family member. Of course, home made gifts are also good memories.

Last year we gave my father-in-law and my sister-in-law soup of the month club. Each month we brought them each frozen soups that we had made and they both loved it. She particularly enjoyed November soup the most and said we should sell it! Since my father-in-law lives alone, we felt good that he had an alternative to canned soup.

The best gift I have ever given was an extremely clean washroom to my very pregnant sister who could no longer bend over. I was smiling and believe me, so was she. We still laugh about it.

Cool giveaway! Quite a few years back, I gave my brother’s girlfriend (who is now my sister-in-law) a scarf I knitted for Christmas. It was super long and she wrapped it around like four times when she wore it. The reason it stands out to me as a favorite is that she wore it until it almost fell apart. When it was finally all pilled and shaggy looking (about four winters later), she asked if I might make her a new one. I knitted a replacement that looked just like the original and gave it to her last Christmas.

Hmmm… the best gift I’ve given would have to be a signed jersey to my brother from his favorite NBA player last year. It was the first time ever in our lives that I was able to surprise him! Thanks for the giveaway!

  9. highwaycottage December 2, 2009 at 2:05 am #

The best gift was last year when my husband bought me a Jelly Roll bokk and 10 FQ’s. I had a quilt made with it by the end of January. Hope I get something as good this year.

  10. Bridget December 2, 2009 at 2:19 am #

Thanks for taking part in this, while the glove I knitted my sister last year were pretty good, the best gift has to be the ‘soap box’ that we made for our dad one year. As he likes to talk we made a box that he could stand on and take his weight, with soap box written on the side. He still pulls it out when he realises he’s been lecturing for too long.

  11. Deb D December 2, 2009 at 2:31 am #

What a great giveaway question! I think the most happily received Christmas present I have given would be the set of large Chinese porcelain soup bowls I gave to my sister-in-law. She was desperate to own some, but being financially pushed at the time, just drooled from afar. Her eyes just lit up when she opened her present and I’m told she uses them every day, even if it’s just to hold chopped food waiting to be thrown into her frypan!

  12. jo December 2, 2009 at 3:21 am #

    that quilt is great!
the best gift was a scan of my son when I was pregnant sent to my mom, she had almost given up on me starting a family, I live in Japan so it was easy to keep for a few weeks until Christmas.

  13. chia December 2, 2009 at 4:05 am #

when i was 21, i knitted a sweater for my boyfriend. it was my first handmade item and i was so proud of myself. we broke up soon after that. 9yrs later, i was inspired to knit a jumper for my daughter’s second bday.

  14. Jody December 2, 2009 at 5:48 am #

That’s an awesome giveaway…as for a favourite gift I made….I’d have to say one year I made a bunch of scarves for all the women in my family. It was great seeing them wear something I handmade for them. My friends and I had got together and made all of our gifts in a big sewing session…the making and giving were equally fun:)

  15. Alexis December 2, 2009 at 6:16 am #

I loved the initialled cufflinks I gave my hisband one year (he’s now lost them though!) but I think my favourite will be given this Christmas, I’ve made my parents in law a quilt like your with pictures of their two granddaughters – hope they love it!

  16. djaj December 2, 2009 at 6:26 am #

Fabrics ? Tools ? Just what I nid to *finally* start quilting !
    Thanks !

  17. lili Wilkinson December 2, 2009 at 6:38 am #

Last year all my gifts were handmade. My favourite was a softie Chinese dragon for my Mum – she’s a children’s author and is totally obsessed with dragons! I based him on a Han Dynasty dragon, with long drooping whiskers and a curled tail.

  18. Erin D. December 2, 2009 at 7:02 am #

My dad and I love old warbirds, especially WWII aircraft. I volunteered for a warbird museum in Olympia, Washington, and as a surprise gift, I arrange for him to be taken up in several different planes. The grin on his face was the best reward I could have hoped for – he so very happy. Warms my heart to think of it. :)

  19. britt December 2, 2009 at 7:10 am #

socks for my mom. she wears the constantly. it is such a boost to my ego and makes me feel really loved that she would wear them soooo much!! love ya mom!

  20. kellyjo32 December 2, 2009 at 7:12 am #

Very nice! I think I’d love that tool! Best gift was a quilted Christmas stocking for my sister-in-law!

  21. kris December 2, 2009 at 7:13 am #

I have always wanted to try one of those binding tools…
I think my favorite gifts to give were last year, I did all my shopping at fabric stores, and sewed everyone unique gifts. Not all of them have been used as much as I had hoped, but I still felt great giving something that I put so much time and thought into.

  22. bea December 2, 2009 at 7:22 am #

Thank you for the awesome giveaway (and the link to read about your binding tool. I’ve never seen one of these!). We generally don’t do holiday gifts this time of year and we generally don’t do physical gifts any time of year, but my favorite gift for any time was to show up (unexpectedly) at my parents house on my mother’s birthday one year. She thought it would be months and months before she would get to see me again. It was all I could do to scrape together enough money for gas to get there. Her smile and the time I got to spend with her and my sister was wonderful. I’m thinking I’m due for this sort of present again. Its been years since I surprised her.

  23. Kelley December 2, 2009 at 7:30 am #

I gave my husband a snowblower the first Christmas we had in our house. He practically did cartwheels over it, and every single year when he gets it out he bubbles over it for days. You’d think it was a sewing machine! ;)

  24. Sandy December 2, 2009 at 7:30 am #

Mine favorite gift I gave was also a quilt, the first large one I made that I gave to my Mom who taught me how to quilt.

  25. brite December 2, 2009 at 7:30 am #

I didn’t even know about the binding tool- thanks for enlightening me! :) Favorite gift given: probably the embroidered handprints of all the grandchildren so my Mom could frame them.

  26. Louby Lou December 2, 2009 at 7:32 am #

I think the best gift I’ve ever given was tickets to a concert for my mum, she’d never been to one before and was so excited, it was three years ago and she still talks about it. Much better than another piece of jewellery that will just be left in the bottom of her jewellery box.

  27. keren December 2, 2009 at 7:35 am #

I gave my neice a beautiful tutu which she adored. so great to give a present I made myself :)

  28. Anya December 2, 2009 at 7:44 am #

How wonderful! My favorite gift to give is always a quilt. Thanks for the chance!

  29. Monica December 2, 2009 at 7:46 am #

I love that American Jane fabric! I have a feeling that this year will be my favorite for gifts – It’ll be my first time giving a quilt. I’m still working on it, and have yet to do the binding, so reading about your binding tool was very helpful! When I was in middle school I made who an ear out of paper mache for my dad, an audiologist. I was very proud of that odd little thing!

  30. Amy December 2, 2009 at 7:53 am #

my favorites were toys given to my neices that they didn’t seem to really enjoy that much at first, but are not sleeping with them each night.

  31. Patricia December 2, 2009 at 8:06 am #

I’m impressed with the tool! I could use one of those! Thanks for the giveaway, it is very generous. Oh! An I was most-impressed with your colourful-squares quilt down below!

  32. Gwyneth December 2, 2009 at 8:08 am #

a handmade cape for my nephew. he LOVED it!

  33. leah December 2, 2009 at 8:25 am #

the best gift was a book i made for my mom after her stroke –
i gathered old photos, wrote stories so she could remember everyone… she cried, i cried…
to everyone – enjoy the holiday season…

  34. emtdlb December 2, 2009 at 8:30 am #

My favorite gift I gave was a needlepoint picture I made for my grandparents when I was in middle school. It wasn’t that good, but they loved it and still have it up on the wall 3 moves and 25 years later. Wonderful stuff you have there, would like to try the tool, anything to make it easier. Thanks for the chance!!!!

  35. Vicki December 2, 2009 at 8:32 am #

This year I am giving my SIL a handmade quilt, I’m hoping it will be one of my best gifts ever.

The year we got a Wii and the year my son got a Leap Pad (he was 4) were pretty good, too. :D

  36. melissa December 2, 2009 at 8:33 am #

favorite gift i ever gave was a scrap book i made of my son’s first year of life for his grandma. she cried and cried!

  37. Cortney December 2, 2009 at 8:39 am #

hmmm My fav gift that I ever gave would have to be everything I made for my friends baby shower….gift bag that can be used as a diaper bag, birp cloths, bibs, shoes, hand knit hat and socks, bird mobile, and some crocheted stuffies

  38. Astrid December 2, 2009 at 8:39 am #

Isn’t it a nice way to find lovely blogs you didn’t know before? Like yours! I love the quilts you’ve sewn.
And the binding tool looks great, every time I have problems with my bindings :0(

I think the gifts my children will get this year are wonderful, my daughter will get a clarinet and my son a guitar! They both got a quilt years ago, a quilt is a wonderful gift every time, not only on christmas!

  39. roseread December 2, 2009 at 8:45 am #

The best gift I’ve given would have to be the hat that I spun and knit for my brother. I used natural colored Icelandic wool and spun it and then knit it into a classic touque.

  40. Crystal December 2, 2009 at 8:45 am #

Ahh that is a beautiful quilt! Thank you for doing this giveaway!

I think my favorite gift will be this year. I am making quilts for my siblings and I am very excited to give them to them. Each one will fit their personality!

  41. Laura December 2, 2009 at 8:51 am #

Probably something I knitted. Like the scarf I made for mom!

  42. Marianne December 2, 2009 at 9:03 am #

A Christmas themed quilt I donated to a fundraiser for my daughter’s youth symphony. Gosh, how I loved that quilt! Thanks for the opportunity.

  43. Jody December 2, 2009 at 9:08 am #

I love to make dresses for my girl’s presents.

  44. Pookie December 2, 2009 at 9:08 am #

What a great giveaway! I love American Jane fabric best, and I’ve never used a binding tool like that.

My favorite gift was one my sister and I gave our mother last year. She’d been dabbling in quilting for a number of years, but the rest of us were all avowed cross-stitchers, so she never got to share her love of quilting. But then last year my sister and I were both bitten big time by the quilting bug. So our Christmas gift to her was telling her, “We both want you to teach us how to quilt!” The look on her face was a lot like your Cabbage Patch Kid face!

  45. Teresa C December 2, 2009 at 9:16 am #

One year I made doll clothes for my girls’ dolls. I spent a lot of time and made them matching nightgowns, they loved them.

  46. Corvus December 2, 2009 at 9:21 am #

Last year I gave my boyfriend some very nice yarn, then got to spend time with him teaching him to knit (which he loved- he’s knitting gifts this year).

    Thank you!

  47. missknitta December 2, 2009 at 9:30 am #

The favorite gift I gave my husband was an espresso machine since (ahem) now I get to drink lattes every morning. It also makes him really happy!

Thanks so much for hosting the giveaway!

  48. Tracy C. December 2, 2009 at 9:41 am #

I knit a couple of easy scarves for a friend at work. They were very easy and simple scarves, but she loves them and that makes them very special to me. She wears them quite often and I love to see how she enjoys them. That’s what really counts, right?

Thanks for the giveaway. Even if I don’t win I’m getting me one of those binding tools. So, cool.

  49. Annie December 2, 2009 at 9:43 am #

Last year I made my son a set of knitted dinosaurs to go along with a book called “Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs.” The dinos were of course presented in a bucket, he loved it :)

  50. Linda December 2, 2009 at 9:45 am #

What a great giveaway! My favorite gift that I made was a complete wardrobe of Barbie clothes I made for a niece. I was in my 20’s at the time and remember having such fun picking out the fabrics and embelishments. Pam loved the Barbie clothes!

  51. Terri Kruse December 2, 2009 at 9:46 am #

What a great giveaway. Your quilts are beautiful!

  52. Sara December 2, 2009 at 9:48 am #

News of our baby. We had not told a bunch of people and finally told them the other day as an early christmas gift. Everyone thought we were not going to have kids so it came as a big shock that I am due March 28th.

I stink at binding and it’s always the last step when it comes to joining the ends. I need this tool!!!

  53. Tawny Bee December 2, 2009 at 9:50 am #

That quilt is so precious. The best gift I ever gave someone was so silly. Last year we gave our 2 year old a Vtech laptop. It was just a toy, but it did real things. My little boy still uses it everyday to be just like his daddy who fixes computers for a living. He even sends me pretend emails and check his Tweets. Adorable. Best gift we could have given him.

  54. Sarah December 2, 2009 at 9:51 am #

Mine is a quilt too! For my sister who is moving into a new house. It’s actually her present this year, so I haven’t seen her reaction yet, but I’m super excited – it’s probably the most effort I’ve put into a gift ever.

  55. Erika December 2, 2009 at 9:55 am #

My favorite gift is also a quilt! I made one for my then-boyfriend when we’d been dating for a couple of years and he liked it so much he would take it off the bed every night so it wouldn’t get “messed up”. It took me a little while to convince him that sleeping under it wasn’t going to harm it!

  56. Megan December 2, 2009 at 9:57 am #

I made an apron for my niece. She wore it all day on Christmas, and even wore it to school once!

  57. sharon December 2, 2009 at 10:00 am #

l gave my niece an ipod — I am the favorite aunt, now

  58. finger thumb December 2, 2009 at 10:09 am #

I can’t say what was my favourite gift to give, but I can tell you that everyone in my family likes to give ‘scavenger hunt’ presents the best. That’s where the gift under the tree is just an envelope with a clue. Then the clue leads you through a series of hiding places with other clues until, after about 5 or 6 trips up and down the stairs and in and out of the house, you find the actual present hidden in the garage or something. So exciting to hunt for it and finally find it.

  59. ~Helena~ December 2, 2009 at 10:18 am #

Cookies, my Grandpa loves sweets after my Grandma pasted away I gave him lots of cookies.

  60. Jessica December 2, 2009 at 10:20 am #

great giveaway! My favorite gift ever was a season of theater tickets for my mom. She loved it!

That quilt is terrific. So neat!

  61. Elaine December 2, 2009 at 10:26 am #

Can’t think of a favorite, but I always love to watch everyone open their gifts and see how their reactions. Great giveaway – the binding tool looks interesting.

  62. Christin December 2, 2009 at 10:34 am #

I made a patchwork quilt for my sister who was moving into her first apartment:) Lovely prizes!! Thanks!

  63. Courtney December 2, 2009 at 10:38 am #

Cool tool! My favorite gift to give is knitted felted slippers. I have made a set for all of my siblings and parents and living in Minnsesota they are well used. Then all of my nieces and nephews each wanted some so that was their gift last year. I wasn’t too sure they would be appreciated but last week at Thanksgiving almost every kid brought thier slippers with them for the day. It was so much fun to see!

  64. Lindsay December 2, 2009 at 10:41 am #

What a great giveaway! My favorite gift is still in the works! I’m just finishing my first project…a tablerunner for my mom! Thanks for a chance to win!

  65. Rachel December 2, 2009 at 10:42 am #

My favorite gift I gave was the first quilt I made. I gave it to my grandma since all my life she had been making me blankets.

  66. Brittney December 2, 2009 at 10:42 am #

I consider myself an awful gift giver but I do think that the best was when I introduced my little cousin to American girl dolls and bought her the Kirsten doll. She still loves it!

  67. kellijo December 2, 2009 at 10:43 am #

I think it will be this year. I am planning on making all of the presents for my family and my boyfriends family. I didn’t even plan on it, but am very excited to see the looks on my families faces.

  68. Laura December 2, 2009 at 10:43 am #

My favorite gift was the first “real” quilt I ever made. It was a bias-stripped quilt made with all asian prints, starring big koi that I fussy cut. It holds a lot of significance for us as my husband has a koi tattoo in honor of our eldest son. I managed to sew up and quilt the entire thing in secret which was no easy feat. I was and still am so proud of that quilt and thankful to my mother and grandmother for passing down their crafting knowledge to me.

  69. Heather December 2, 2009 at 10:45 am #

This is great I adore American Jane! My favorite gift given was a quilt hat I made and gave to my mom. Thanks for the opportunity!

  70. sommerkind December 2, 2009 at 10:50 am #

This year’s gift to my mother is my absolute favourite. It’s a form sor shotglasses from ice. She looked in the shop window for hours and decided she didn’t need them in the end, so I sent my father to distract her and bought it secretly. In August.

  71. Natasha December 2, 2009 at 10:53 am #

I’m pretty proud of the embroidered handprints of my daughter and her cousins that I made for my MIL. I framed those into log cabin squares and made a small keepsake quilt.

  72. momawake December 2, 2009 at 10:58 am #

I love to give my dd American Girl dolls especially when she hasn’t asked for one. She has about 16 of them now. One year I made little 4 patch bags for all of them, a little quilt for Bitty Baby and a mini quilt for Bitty Bear. All of the items matched a jelly roll bag I made for my dd.

  73. kelley December 2, 2009 at 11:03 am #

My favorite gift was definitely a quilt (my first!) that I gave to my boyfriend four years ago, when we were first dating. He loved it, and it’s still hanging on his wall. I went out on a limb with that one, giving it to him so early in our relationship but I’m so glad I did.

  74. Little Miss S. December 2, 2009 at 11:24 am #

I think my favorite present I ever made must have been a big shawl I knit for my grandmother for her 80th birthday a few years ago. She is always cold and she brings it around with her where ever she goes. But my favorite present to make is a set of greeting cards I make for my mum every single year. The design changes, the number of cards change, but it’s on top of her list every year and she looks surprised every time she opens the present :)

  75. Emilee Turner December 2, 2009 at 11:27 am #

I think handmade gifts are at the top of my list. One year I made little Christmas throw quilts for two of my sisters and my two nephews. I think those are some of my favorite gifts ever! Now I just need to get a Christmas quilt made for my other sister so that she doesn’t feel left out!!!

  76. Kirsten December 2, 2009 at 11:29 am #

I loved giving my mother a hand knit shawl in a color I knew she’d love. It was so fun to see her face. I love giving handmade gifts, especially when people truly understand the amount of effort and love that goes into one!

  77. Karen H December 2, 2009 at 11:37 am #

I just finished my first quilt last month for our anniversary. It is a small throw size and the fabric squares were cut from my MIL’s clothing after she passed away in 2000.

  78. Kaye Prince December 2, 2009 at 11:39 am #

I love American Jane, and that binding tool looks so neat! Hmmmm, I think right now I may be working on my favourite gift. I’m making my Mum a quilt for Christmas – it’s only my fourth one. For a long time I think my Mum had a really hard time reconciling how creative I am and how much pride I have in the things I make. She always wanted me to concentrate on school and didn’t think the creative side was as important, but now that I am in graduate school getting my Masters she has really come to see my creative side as something good and compliments the things that I make. I really hope that she likes it, and that it will open up a dialogue between use.

  79. Kristen December 2, 2009 at 11:42 am #

last year, i made skirts and scarves for all the little girls on my husbands side of the family. i loved doing it and i loved seeing the girls prance around, happy as could be!

  80. leigh7911 December 2, 2009 at 11:45 am #

I’d have to say that my favorite gift I’ve given so far is a boring, practical one… I paid for my sister to have an eye exam and get glasses one year. Not exactly a fun thing, but I know she enjoyed being able to see easier after it!

  81. gill December 2, 2009 at 11:55 am #

    what a great question!
it has to be the chickens for my mum a few years ago!
    gill x

  82. Carolyn December 2, 2009 at 12:02 pm #

My favorite gift was my first quilt. I gave it to my sister for her first baby. She helped pick out the fabrics, but didn’t see the final design or anything. I gave it to her at her Baby Shower. I loved making it and I loved giving it!

Thanks for the chance to win!

  83. Stephanie G. December 2, 2009 at 12:06 pm #

Last Christmas Eve, while we were having dinner, the discussion turned to things we each wanted to do in the future. My mom mentioned that one day she’d like to see Cirque du Soleil. As it turned out, I had purchased two tickets for my parents to go during out upcoming vacation to Disney World. When she opened the gift a half an hour later, she burst into tears.

  84. Sara December 2, 2009 at 12:10 pm #

I wrote my Dad a cookbook last year, which took forever and of which I was very proud, but I think this year will be the best on all fronts. :)

  85. Shannon F. December 2, 2009 at 12:11 pm #

That quilt is so sweet. I gave my husband a skull “topper?” for his manual transmission stick. He had told me a story several months prior that he had wanted one in high school and never got it, he thought they were SO COOL. It took me forever to find, but I found one and it was the most fun gift I’ve ever given

  86. Tong December 2, 2009 at 12:12 pm #

Thank you for this wonderful giveaway! The best gift I have ever given was a watch I gave to my then boyfriend, who is now my fiance. He loved it so much that he would wear it to his army trainings and got it all battered and we had to get it sent back to the factory to have it repaired.

  87. Michele J. December 2, 2009 at 12:13 pm #

A few years ago I made lap quilts for my sisters out of all of our old baby clothes – they loved them!

We did a Family cookbook over 20 yrs ago & people still talk about it.
They were all easy recipes that we used a lot-in fact some were are own “inventions” & previously unwritten so we really had to test because we had never measured when making before. It was a lot of fun & the kids got really involved in it too!

My favorite is the quilt that I am giving my mother this Christmas. I can’t wait!

  90. Judy December 2, 2009 at 12:32 pm #

My favorite gift ever, was a homemade Christmas ornament that my son gave me one year when he was 5 years old.

  91. Kathy December 2, 2009 at 12:38 pm #

loved the year that all the kids pitched in to buy my MIL a gift certificate to redo her wedding ring and other loose diamonds into something that she could wear. the look on her face was priceless-then the tears :)

My favorite would have to be 2 favorites the quilt I made for my Dad for Christmas Called Dad’s Fall color tour and the Quilt I made for myself and my sister really liked so I gave it to her for christmas the Jewel of the Prairie Quilt.

    Thanks for a great giveaway.

    Cute fabrics!!!

I’m really excited about a gift I’m giving my niece this Christmas: a cloth bag with her name on the front, all stuffed full of felt food.

(And my giant embarrassing glasses were blue leopard print. Thank you, 1994!)

  94. Megan December 2, 2009 at 1:12 pm #

My favorite gift was a collection of caviar that I gave to my dad one Christmas many years ago. Despite his eclectic tastes in food, and all his travels, he had never tasted real beluga caviar, nor ossetra, and not even salmon roe, I think. So we packed it all up in ice and brought everything to go with it…and he was just in heaven. It was a surprise out of the blue, and he relished every last salty drop. And thereafter, whenever my husband and I have made it home for Christmas, my dad has always tried to come up with some exotic gourmet treat for us to try, in hopes that he can give back to us what we gave to him that day.

  95. Amy December 2, 2009 at 1:25 pm #

what a thoughtful gift your quilt was! My favorite gift was a portrait of my husband I painted for him. I had disappeared and spent so much time working on it he started to worry about me lol. He loved it though!

  96. marymary December 2, 2009 at 1:34 pm #

One year when I was in high school I made dresses for my 3 sisters for Christmas. They loved them and I was so proud of myself.

  97. daisy December 2, 2009 at 1:35 pm #

I had huge pink glasses too, mine had litlle hearts in the corners. ahahaha
and i really enjoyed your memory!

my favourite gift was a scrapbook i made to my best friend. she’s more than just my best friend. she has always been a sister to me, because she was married to my brother through all my teen years, so when they split up i wanted to make sure she knew that she would still be my sister. i put together lots of our memories and glued real sand to the cover so that she would always have a piece of my country with her (i’m from Portugal and she’s from Slovenia, where the beaches have no sand).

thank you for making me remember this!!!

  98. Michelle December 2, 2009 at 1:56 pm #

A few years back I made my boyfriend (now husband) a box ‘o love. I wrote 365 things that I loved about him and put them in a jar, he had to take one out every day until the next Christmas (he loved reading those every morning!) and I put together a little photo album of us, plus other little trinkets that reminded me of him and our relationship. I made coupons for silly things like me doing the dishes, or making him dinner etc. It was fun to make and he still has the box 5 years later!

This year I am making (in collaboration with my 3 year old) table runners with some of her art embroidered in patches .. it’s from the book Handmade home, and I think they will be well recieved!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

ha… I had the pink glasses also! I love your quilt, so meaningful! My favorite gift that I’ve given was to my sister in law and mother in law… it was a homemade cookback of our favorite family recipes, typed up all pretty, with fun family photos on each page.

  101. Cara December 2, 2009 at 2:07 pm #

Favorite gift I gave….probably the cross stitched pillow case to my mom! She loved it, and adores hand work but can’t do it herself.

  102. Breanna December 2, 2009 at 2:09 pm #

My favorite gift to give is a movie popcorn bucket filled with microwave popcorn, a movie or a gift certificate for movie rentals, two bozes of candy, and two pops. Kids love them and Adults like the easy of family movie night!

  103. Nicole December 2, 2009 at 2:09 pm #

What beautiful fabric!! I love your blog also- great quilts!!! My favorite gift I ever gave was a scrapbook I made for my parents. My brother and sister and I were all in college and were pretty strapped for cash, so we pulled our money together for the supplies, and I (being the crafty one) put together a 50 page scrapbook of old photos from our childhood. I’ve only seen my mother cry 3 times- and when she looked through that book, it was one of them :)
    Merry Christmas!!

  104. Erika December 2, 2009 at 2:11 pm #

I think my favorite gift I have made was a quilt for my costuming professor. It was made entirely of scraps from the only show we ever entirely built.

  105. Katie Bowlby December 2, 2009 at 2:17 pm #

Thanks for the giveaway! I love that fabric. I think a favorite gift I’ve made for someone is the quilt I just finished up for my son. I love thinking that he’ll be able to snuggle up at night in something I made!

  106. whistlepeaknits December 2, 2009 at 2:20 pm #

When my brother and sister were still young I took them on a train trip to a chocolate factory for Christmas. I don’t think I’ll ever top that!

  107. Megan December 2, 2009 at 2:22 pm #

My favorite gift was a first-edition printing of “Why the Chimes Rang” for my father. It was his favorite Christmas book as a kid.

  108. Bec Clarke December 2, 2009 at 2:24 pm #

Oh lovely fabric and I love that photo quilt you made, very clever.
I made a quilt for my mum 2 years ago, just simple one from a Jelly roll but she loves it.

  109. Cynthia Sawyer December 2, 2009 at 2:27 pm #

Gee, every year I think “That was a good gift I gave”. This year my favorite is a IPod I’m loading for my mother. I researched billboard Top 100 songs form her teenage years and early 20s and loaded up the IPod with all the oldies. Saves her dragging out her LPs and torturing us with the stereo.

  110. MichelleM December 2, 2009 at 2:34 pm #

Love the fabrics! My favorite gift is going to be the quilt I’m giving my mom this Xmas.

  111. Suzy December 2, 2009 at 2:37 pm #

The best gift I’ve given was a Christmas village for my niece. She gets so excited to put it up every year

  113. Holly December 2, 2009 at 2:56 pm #

My favorite gift given was a roll of pennies. My boyfriend (now husband) had lost his grandmother earlier in the year, and she had always filled an Advent stocking for him with things like rolls of pennies. So on the first day of Advent, I gave him a little felt stocking w/ a roll of pennies. We both cried.

  114. Desiree December 2, 2009 at 2:57 pm #

My favorite gift was a book of pictures to my sisters. They loved it. Thank you for the chance to win. I hope you have a wonderful Chirstmas. -dez

I am LOVING that quilt on your header / next post, btw.

Favorite gift…favorite gift…do birthdays count? I flew my then-boyfriend to Vegas for a surprise party one year…he turned the surprise around on me and proposed! That was almost 9 years ago!

  116. Sarah December 2, 2009 at 3:11 pm #

My favourite gift that I ever gave (and it was *hard* to part with) was a handmade (by me) cloth busy book for a friend’s baby. I loved that book – and it took ages to make it :)

  117. krystina December 2, 2009 at 3:12 pm #

what a great giveaway and a great blog! Your quilts are just awe inspiring, I’m so glad you joined giveaway day or I fear I may have never found you! I’m adding you to my favorites.

Best gift I ever gave… that would have to be the lace stole I made for my grandmother last year. I still look at it and think “did I seriously make that?!”

  118. limor December 2, 2009 at 3:23 pm #

Favorite gift has to be a little dress and shoe set that I made for a friend’s daughter. She was so excited when she unwrapped them.

Favorite gift given is a trip to the Houston Quilt Festival for a friend who started me down this wonderful quilt making path

  120. Grace Wong December 2, 2009 at 3:32 pm #

oh, that question brings me good memories. I once gave my friend a crunching dog usb and we had so many ideas for its “uses”. LOL

  121. Jeni December 2, 2009 at 3:38 pm #

My dad was the first person to encourage me into photography and last year I created a book for him of some of my best photographs :)

  122. Jessica December 2, 2009 at 3:43 pm #

My favourite gift that I have given was a shirt that I made my husband the first christmas we were dating. I had never sewn something for someone else and was quite pleased with how it turned out. Thanks for the chance to win.

  123. Sarah December 2, 2009 at 3:46 pm #

My college roomate is an artist. One year I made a 75 slot colored pencil/chalk roll up for her and bought a mole skin notebook and sewed fabric to the cover to match the roll up. She loved it and I get all kinds of nice art from it. Great give away

  124. Jerree December 2, 2009 at 3:54 pm #

My favorite christmas present I ever gave was an electric car my son got when he was 4. He drove it up and down the street for years.

The best gift I ever gave was to my Mom– I organized all her recipes by category, plus the hundreds of recipes from my Grandma (her Mom) after she died. My mom was so happy! (And so far, the recipes have STAYED organized!)

    Thanks for the opportunity!

  128. Heidi December 2, 2009 at 4:34 pm #

I love that photo memory quilt. I was lucky enough to not have to wear glasses until adulthood, but I do love to torture my sisters with photos of them in their giant owly eyeglasses! LOL
One of my favorite gifts that I have made was a plush, jointed doll I made for my niece last Christmas. The doll’s name was Colette and she is a French diva. She came complete with a wardrobe in black, pink and white. My niece and her friends still adore her. That makes me happy.

  129. Allison S. December 2, 2009 at 4:57 pm #

I am really excited about the gift I am giving to my mom this year–a pair of embroidered pillowcases I’ve been working on for two years. I think she is really going to love them!!
    Thanks for the opportunity!

  130. Amy December 2, 2009 at 4:58 pm #

I love your quilt story, what a nice gift! I’d say my favorite gift that I gave someone, was the toy transport truck I gave my dad for Christmas five years ago. I had this moment of inspiration when I saw a blue truck looking similar to the one he drives at a store. I took it home, painted his company logo on the front and cut out little pictures of my face and his and put us inside the truck in the seats! Then I attached a box of chocolate as a trailer and put a small toy chicken on top (since his job involves shipping poultry.) He loved it and it was so much fun to make.

  131. Consuelo December 2, 2009 at 5:05 pm #

The favorite gift I ever gave for Christmas was a small baby doll quilt I made for my daughter.

  132. sewfunky December 2, 2009 at 5:11 pm #

  133. Erica Ferguson December 2, 2009 at 5:40 pm #

The favorite gift I gave that I made was a wool vest I knit for my Dad. He wears it all the time. I love that it keeps him warm.

  134. chancy December 2, 2009 at 5:49 pm #

Hmmm, its hard to choose. I’d say the “Firefly compilation” I put together for my brother a few years ago, including a knit Jayne hat, a Jayne t-shirt, and a Jayne quote button. He loved it.

ps. Yours is the second new found blog I’ve subscribed to today. I love your quilting. Love it.

  135. meagangracie December 2, 2009 at 5:51 pm #

I’m curious about that binding tool!

  136. Jamie December 2, 2009 at 5:53 pm #

I handmade some memory books that compiled all of our favorite childhood memories and gave them to my siblings and parents.

  137. Valerie December 2, 2009 at 6:06 pm #

I love that story and that quilt, what a treasure, your parents are so lucky! The very first quilt I ever made was also a Christmas gift, but it wasn’t anywhere near as nice as yours :)

One year I surprised my husband with REALLY good tickets to a hockey game and a jersey personalized with his name. Not handmade, but he loved it, and I’m smiling sitting here remembering now :)

  138. Ashley December 2, 2009 at 6:28 pm #

One year I started making my mom a chocolate brown knitted scarf. I started it way too late and it never got finished… until the next summer when I dug it out and finished it by the fall. It’s really long, and I wasn’t a very fast knitter then. :)

  139. Andrea December 2, 2009 at 6:29 pm #

Best gift I ever gave was photobooks to my parents. They are divorced and my Dad didn’t have a lot of the photos from our childhood (it was amicable so he could always look at them but it’s not the same as having them all the time). My Dad was so happy, he cried (and he’s not really a crier). Best feeling ever!

  140. lisa December 2, 2009 at 6:30 pm #

durring one of the moves durring Dec my hubby and I had (four years in a row!!) I found a picture of him as probibly a 5 year old and his dad who died a month after we moved in together, the day we told him we were having girl. The photo was of the two of them in one of those old photo booths you see at fairs and carnivals. I went to Costco and had them blow it up and I framed it. he never guessed that was what I had for him that year!!

  141. Jessie Hansen December 2, 2009 at 6:32 pm #

I learned how to etch glass this year just so I could etch Marilyn Monroe on some glasses for my sister. I think it is my favorite out going gift ever!

  142. Raheli December 2, 2009 at 6:43 pm #

    That quilt is so sweet!
My favorite gift I made was soup stock that I made using beef bones from the farm I work for. It’s so healthy & my family usually uses powder bases (which are just salt!).

  143. Rose December 2, 2009 at 6:55 pm #

    Love that quilt.

My favourite gift was a handmade paperbag scrapbook album I made for my mum. It tooke me 4 weeks working on it several hours a day but oh the end result was fantastic and she treasures it.

  144. lanigan December 2, 2009 at 6:57 pm #

One of my favorite gifts was a set of embroidered handkerchiefs for a friend of mine several years ago. It is one of those gifts that was definitely just for him because not too many fellas use hankies anymore!

  145. anne December 2, 2009 at 6:59 pm #

my favorite gift I have ever givin was plane tickets for my parents to go to florida.

  147. Sylvie December 2, 2009 at 7:06 pm #

My favorite gift is pretty simple, but the big smile it put on my godson’s face was priceless. He is crazy about dogs and asked for all kind of things dog-related. So, as a joke, I baked bone-shaped gingerbread cookies and packaged them in a miniature dog house.

  148. LFinn December 2, 2009 at 7:07 pm #

Last year, my husband’s brother and wife came to visit us and we scheduled family pictures with them and our kids. Then we took the photo shoot and turned it into a photo book that we gave to my in-laws for Christmas. My mother-in-law cried when she opened it, and when she showed it TO EVERY RELATIVE over the Christmas holidays. It was a great surprise…….

Just for fun, my second best gift (I can’t remember if it was Christmas or not) was for my husband, who loves to read. I bought him a personal embosser that says “The Library of _____” for him to use on his books. Thanks for a fun giveaway!

  149. Jocelyn December 2, 2009 at 7:25 pm #

I think the year I made my son a scrapbook from when he was a baby up til his 16th birthday. He is the hardest in our family to find gifts for. He may not exactly think it was the best gift, but maybe when he is older he will appreciate it. Thanks for participating in the Giveaway day.

  150. Judy December 2, 2009 at 7:28 pm #

My favorite gift I have given was a cute mermaid farbic toddler dress for my 2 year old’s ‘girlfriend’.

Bestest given gift ever…. hmm, I think it would have to be the delicate lavender sachet’s I made for my partner a couple of years back…. His face was worth a zillion dollars… yet he keeps the sachet’s in his sock drawer!

I knitted a sweater for my hubby–it took me about 4 years off and on.

  156. jessie Lathroum December 2, 2009 at 8:35 pm #

Many many years ago, there was a fire in my Grandparents basement. In the basement were mostly ALL of her pictures, of my dad, uncle, her, grandpa,… virtually all pictures. Somehow a small box of random baby pictures of my dad, some grad pics, mostly wedding pictures of my grandparents survived. Anyway, they ended up at my patents house and i “stole” them and made my father a photo album/scrapbook of the only remaining pictures from my fathers life, he cried and i cried and it was the perfect gift.

  157. Casey December 2, 2009 at 8:40 pm #

the embarassing huge glasses? yup, I had those in red and then for some reason in a brown design too, why my mother let me buy those ugly things I’ll never understand!

My favorite gift is one I’m giving this year, it’s a blanket for my mom, it’s the first present I’ve given that was actually handmade!

  158. Liz December 2, 2009 at 8:50 pm #

I think my favorite present I gave for the holidays has to be my first pair of knit gloves that I gave to my mother. I spun the yarn myself and everything. She loves those gloves and gets compliments all the time. The other favorite giveaway was one year for mother’s day my sister and I made my mom earrings and a necklace. The necklace doesn’t get worn very often (it needs more work, it is too plain) and my mom wears the earrings a ton and also gets lots of compliments on them.

I never had huge glasses like those but my parent’s totally did. I also still have my cabbage patch kids. I wonder what toys my kids will “need” in the future and if any will involve fights in toys r us. I know the teens of today had their tickle me emlo that their parent’s had to fight for.

When my sister got married I got all the women in the family to write down one recipe along with a favorite memory of making that dish and then I collected them all and put them on index cards and made her a fancy little recipe box for them all to go in. She said it was her favorite gift ever.

  160. Mirza December 2, 2009 at 9:04 pm #

My favorite gift I have given was a doll I made my DD last year. She wanted a mermaid fairy doll. So I created her using a pattern I purchased from someone on ETSY and added a removable tail and wings. Crocheted curly red hair too because my DD wanted her to have red curly hair.

  161. Erin Hutchinson December 2, 2009 at 9:22 pm #

On Christmas Eve, 2001, I let my husband know that I was pregnant with our first child. It was the best Christmas present I ever gave, hands down!

  163. Susan Piluk December 2, 2009 at 9:31 pm #

HMMMM my favorite gift would have to be a 3ft tall baby doll my maternal grandmother gave me when I was a child…this doll was very loved bacause my grandparents couldn’t afford many things so when I did receive a gift from them it was cherished.

  164. Rachael December 2, 2009 at 9:34 pm #

Last year I gave my mother-in-law a quilt I made, and she nearly cried, she was so excited. To see someone I love that happy with something I made was all I could ever ask for. Thanks for being so generous!

  165. Sharrie December 2, 2009 at 9:49 pm #

A couple years ago I gave my mom a soft-side tool bag filled with tools. She always says that the little amount of tools she has always “walk away”. My dad did a double take when he saw the tool bag and asked if there was a mix-up. Nope! They were all hers and she loved it!

  166. jane December 2, 2009 at 9:52 pm #

Love the binding tool, and I’ve been buying extra with the Joanns coupons to share with friends. Fabic is cool. Thanks for hosting this giveaway. Happy Holidays.

Last Christmas, I made my best friend a super feminine apron. She apparently made her boyfriend many-a-meals in that little number and I’d like to think it played a large part in her engagement! Hooray for sexy aprons :)

each year I have a new favorite! This year I think it is the Fancy Nancy blanket for my 4 year old!

  170. Keri December 2, 2009 at 10:28 pm #

Well, my mom made my brother and me sit on Santa for a loooooong time. I mean into our teens when we had to find far away malls so we didn’t see people we knew.
She always hung up the photos, but I decided to make her a little scrapbook with a photo from each year. The kicker was that I made my brother take one last trip to Santa (we were 24 and 22 I believe at the time).

So I gave her the book and first she laughed, then she got farther into the book and bawled, then she came to the last picture and laughed AND cried.

That was a good present. Bad thing is that I will NEVER beat it.

  171. Nancy December 2, 2009 at 10:30 pm #

I love making pajamas and robes for my kids when they were young. Now I am making quilts for everyone!

I crocheted a Navajo Indian afghan for nephew one Christmas. The colors were red, white, gray and black. This was just after the release of the movie, Dances With Wolves, and my nephew was thrilled. He draped the afghan around his shoulders and pretended to be the main character of the movie. I was thrilled that someone appreciated what I made. Thanks for the giveaway.

Great giveaway! I made my great Aunt a quilt with hand applique! She loves it as much as I loved making it.

I learned to double-knit and charted the John Deere symbol to make my Dad a hat. (He wasn’t all that impressed at first, but admirers convinced him…)

  175. Jen December 2, 2009 at 11:36 pm #

My favorite gift was the quilt I gave my mom last year. It was one of my first completed sewing projects. I learned a lot and was so relieved to get it finished in time (I had all-day morning sickness from being pregnant). She has it displayed proudly in her living room. Thanks for the giveaway!

  176. Beth December 2, 2009 at 11:47 pm #

I gave my favorite aunt a quilt in a bow tie pattern and called it “Family Ties”. She is an amazing person, but I don’t think she understands how much we all love and admire her–this quilt was a chance to pamper her, and I think she felt that.

Wow what a tough question…. I guess my favorite would be a poem a wrote for my mom when I was 16 or 17. It was the first poem I wrote and she kept it up in her room until she passed away.

In 1988 I bought my husband a Giants jacket that cost $120. I had never spent that much on a gift let alone a Giants jacket. He was so shocked and excited when he opened it …he still wears it when he snow blows the driveway!!

I love the photo quilt you made!

When I was in fourth or fifth grade, we made potholders for our moms. Basically we made yo-yos around pop bottle tops, then glued them to a wooden base. I made one with purple fabrics for a cluster of grapes, and one with red fabrics for a strawberry. I loved that project, and I loved giving it to my mom. That was over 35 years ago!

last year we gave our parents calendars announcing the upcoming birth of our third child. I think his parents caught on before the opened the calendar but it totally took my dad by surprise!

My favourite gift I gave, was a bag – my first proper made bag, to my aunty. She loved it so much, and so did the rest of the family :)

The best present was the one I gave my now husband the first Christmas after we met.
He had a much loved, but broken watch that he had taken to the shop to have repaired. The repair turned out to be very expensive and we were both poor students back then, so he could not afford to collect it.
I “stole” the receipt, hoping he wouldn’t notice, picked up the watch, paid the price of the repair and gave it to him for Christmas. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the look of complete surprise and joy on his face.

I gave my mum a fridge once. We never had much money growing up and had the same old leaking fourth-hand fridge forever, the freezer was sooo small you couldnt put anything in it but like 2 ice cube trays.
So when I’d left home and been working a while I saved up and bought my mum a new fridge. Then I organised for it to be delivered while she was at work, took the day off myself and went around to wait for it. I had to empty and defrost the old fridge (using a hairdryer when it was taking too long) as the delivery guys would only take away dry fridges and then restock everything in the new one. I also went out and bought all her favourite ice-creams and filled the new BIG freezer. Then I left, so she would come home from work and walk into the kitchen and OMG- where did that come from?????
So yeah, that was the best most satisfying present I ever gave anyone.

    • Emma December 3, 2009 at 4:15 am #

oh and i forgot to say I also bought her some of her favourite imported expensive beer and stocked it in the fridge!

Last year I made a couple of cushions for my sister. Her face was amazing. I think she didn’t really believe I coud sew, and when she saw the cushions… She was so surprised! Plus I had the best of times combining the fabrics and ribbons to make them. :-)

Thanks for the chance to win. I didn’t know about the existence of that binding tool! I’ll have to look for one if I don’t win ;-)

    Cheers from Barcelona!

I love your Christmas quilt! I remember using photo-transfer liquid – it’s so much easier now that there is printable fabric and iron-on transfers!

My favourite gift that I have given someone is flannel nightgowns for my Mom – my grandmother used to make these for her and now that she is no longer with us I love being able to carry on the tradition.

One year I made a gift basket full of items that would keep my sister-in-law close to her family when she left for New York. It included a calendar created from pictures of her nephews and niece, a calling card, music cd, home made cookies, a quilt, etc., etc., She still remembers it to this day and it’s been 8 years.

  190. Morgan December 3, 2009 at 7:47 am #

My favorite gift I gave was a guitar case to someone whose kids I took care of – the kids and I bought it together, put it in a HUGE box, wrapped it, and brought it to her house. It sat for a few weeks under (ok near) the tree with her wondering what on earth it could be. :) A treat for a single mom who usually wraps all of her own “Santa” presents.

  191. Angela December 3, 2009 at 7:53 am #

I gave my aunt, who is always making things for other people, a picnic blanket quilt made with Sandi Henderson’s Ginger Blossum fabric. Last year, I started making all of my gifts, and it’s really satisfying.

There are so many favorite gifts i’ve given over the years but the first that comes to mind is a quilt I made for my stepfather. He spends a couple of months in Alaska every summer and since we couldn’t go with him we decided to send our jeans instead. I cut up the girls old jeans they had outgrown and made a quilt out of them that included patriotic material too. A few years ago the gas line to his house was hit by lightening and it blew the house up. The fist thing he told me was that he was so glad the quilt was still in his camper.

The favorite gift I have given will have to be my oldest son’s desk and supplies…he just started kindergarden and wanted a desk and all the supplies! It was so cute…but there are so many gifts I enjoyed buying of my boys, it is hard to pick! Nothing like seeing a little ones face at Christmas!

  195. Jerri December 3, 2009 at 9:17 am #

I would say the guitar strap I made for my brother last year. It was hard to get started, but easy to finish. He really liked it- more than I thought he would, which is nice because he’s hard to gift for.

  196. Dacia December 3, 2009 at 9:29 am #

That’s a difficult one. I LOVE giving presents and have so much fun buying and making things for people, that it’s hard to pick just one. The first year after my husband I were married we didn’t have very much money, and I got a fabulous deal on some fabrics, so I made 2 large quilts (one for each set of parents – & first time quilting ever!) and fleece throws for everyone else on our list. It took a lot of time, but it felt so good to give them something warm, cozy & nice when we couldn’t afford to buy them anything.

  197. Unity December 3, 2009 at 9:57 am #

So far I have to say that it is the fish hat I made/gave my brother for christmas last year. We will see if it gets topping by one of the gifts I’m making to give away this year.

  198. Summer December 3, 2009 at 10:13 am #

My favorite was last year. My mom and I found some sea green depression glass for my sister that she had wanted really bad at a street market and another lady saw her going for it and snatched it up. VERY RUDE! Anyway, we found almost the exact set the next month at the same street market! She was SO excited & surprised! :)

My favorite gift was a handmade cabbage patch doll my mom made. I still have it and can’t wait to give it to one of my girls.

  200. Laura December 3, 2009 at 10:23 am #

favourite gift I’m giving will probably be this year!! I dyed some yarn and knitted a lace hat and a felted bag for my SIL!

  201. Shelley C December 3, 2009 at 10:29 am #

That Christmas quilt is darling. I’m sure it was well received too. I loved making a cloth doll for my oldest daughter when she was two…I loved that doll almost as much as she did. It’s still around here somewhere, minus most of her hair. I really need to make another for my granddaughter now….

The best gift I gave someone for the holidays was probably the year I flew out to Boston (where my parents live) to surprise my mom for Christmas! She had no idea I was coming, and she was so thrilled to be able to spend Christmas with me!

    THanks for the fun giveaway!

The most favorite gift I have given for the holiday’s is the necklace and earring set that I gave my mom last year. A friend made it to what I wanted for her and she LOVED it!!!

  207. Kelli December 3, 2009 at 11:36 am #

I try to make handmade gifts for everyone in my family each year, but someone gets a special gift. Last year I made my brother a lap quilt in his college colors. That doesn’t sound special…but he went to the rival school of the college that my sister and her husband and my husband and I went to. So he is often ganged up on and teased about it. I went and picked out fabrics in his school colors and sewed a quilt especially for him. This year I am making my Mom a quilt in lots of different fabrics with cherries. She and I love to eat cherries all summer and her Grandmother used to always tell her that life was like cherries–sometimes its sweet and sometimes you get the pit. I think she will really appreciate it.

  208. Becky December 3, 2009 at 11:37 am #

My absolute favorite was a memory book for my husband- it had lots of pictures, momentos, quotes from movies, you name it. We still have it on our bookshelf.

    Beautiful fabric!

  209. Heather December 3, 2009 at 11:50 am #

I was able to get a hold of a video of the Song of the south for my husband, one year for Christmas. What made it all more special was we were separated at the time and it was the only gift he received that year.

Last year I made an alphabet book for my nephews whose parents are in the middle of a divorce. Each letter was connected to pictures of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, family members and encouraging words. It felt really good to do something to remind them how many of us love them in spite of the ugly circumstances they were in.

My favorite gift that I gave was at a time when my husband and I were DIRT POOR. He was in grad school, and we had four kids. He had just lost his job, so Christmas came from the dollar store that year. My husband has three brothers and two sisters, one of whom was married at the time. We got little dart guns from the dollar store for his dad, three brothers, and the one brother-in-law. We wrapped them separately, but then tied all the packages together with the instruction that they were to open them at the same time. And may the best man win. We didn’t get to witness it — we couldn’t afford to travel there that Christmas — but we still hear stories about how fast they were ripping open the packages and what fun it was.

  220. Kim December 3, 2009 at 3:08 pm #

A book. My favorite gifts to get or give are books.

  221. Sonja December 3, 2009 at 4:01 pm #

Last year I made a lap quilt for my son and daughter in law. One side Giants, and the other side Eagles. My daughter in law opened the package and saw the Giants side, was not happy. Them my son opened it up and saw the Eagles side too. They use it for my grandaughter, and everyone asks where they bought it.

I didn’t have glasses to cover my face, but I doubt anyone was really focussing on it, what with the huuuge hair and the pouffy shoulders.
My favorite gift was an embroidered pillow I gave my grandmother (who had tried and failed to teach me as a child). It took me months, but she could find no fault with it, and it was fun to watch her try.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

My favorite gifts were two pairs of knitted socks for my husband that he wears all the time and a knitted stocking cap for my brother that he has almost worn out.

  224. Karie December 3, 2009 at 4:31 pm #

My favorite gift I gave was to my brothers a few years ago. My eldest brother had lost all our family photos from growing up. I had sent away to all our reletives collecting pictures and letters my parents had sent them through the years that they had saved. I made custom scrapbooks for each of my brothers. This project took a year to complete but well worth it. They loved them. (I have yet to make me mine…)

My favorite gift I have given was a Christmas quilt for a friend. It wasn’t perfect and everytime I see it, I want to redo it! But she loves it!

  226. Amy December 3, 2009 at 5:53 pm #

After reading through the comments, my answer of “a quilt” as the favorite gift I’ve given doesn’t seem too original! But it’s still my favorite. I started embroidering a quilt top for my niece before she was born. I knew how to embroider, but not quilt, and I had intended to just sent the top off to a quilter to finish for me. Then I lost my job and had a lot of free time on my hands, so I taught myself how to quilt by hand, and I finished it myself. It’s far from perfect, but my niece loves it, and I can look back on it and see that I did something productive during an otherwise difficult time.

  227. Bonnie C December 3, 2009 at 6:22 pm #

It would be the Embroidery machine I bought for my Mother. She had always talked about one but could not justify spending that much money on a sewing machine. I gave her a box of Kleenix wrapped first and she opened it and had the most puzzling look on her face as to why I gave her hankies. Than she opend the big box and the tears flowed, there in front of her was the machine she dreamed about for so many years. Good thing I gave her the hankies, she really needed them. I found her throughout the day just sitting a staring at her machine and at 3AM I heard her awake, I went to join her and there she sat just staring at the machine. She could not believe she would ever own a Embroidery machine and she used it all the time until she passed. She said it was her very best Christmas, I now have her machine and it will one day go to my grand daughter.

Last Christmas I knitted a pinafore for my daughter’s baby girl. Giving it to her meant so much to me, and I loved making it. It was by far the most complex thing I’ve ever made – in a way, I can’t believe I did it. I know she will cherish it for years to come, even after her daughter has outgrown it.

  229. Liz December 3, 2009 at 7:41 pm #

i love those fabrics, and that binding tool looks awfully bewitching…never seen one before and i’m starting to wonder why not! also, in your christmas quilt, the little girl in the white dress with the sailor collar, sitting in a gold corduroy chair, with blonde curls, could totally be me at age 3. it’s eerie!

my favorite christmas gift i ever gave was a CD i recorded of me playing the piano. i drew my (84 year-old) grandpa in our christmas lottery and didn’t want to just get him the unabridged merriam-webster dictionary CD like he asked (for real). i was in grad school but i still had undergrad contacts in the music dept, so i booked some time in the recital hall, turned my own pages, asked the listening lab guy to mix it for me, and made a recording for him of 11 songs or so. and i made sure he knew he was getting a “surprise”. he was extremely wary of what his 23 y/o granddaughter could come up with. however, he was deeply moved when he got the CD. he died suddenly 6 weeks later and i’m so glad i did the CD for him.

My favorite gift that I’ve given was a scrapbook for my mom for her 60th birthday – it was a complete surprise, and I had family members and old friends send letters and old pictures… it was so much fun!

My favorite handmade gift I’ve ever received wasn’t made for me, just passed on to me. It’s a quilt started by my great grandma, finished by my Nana, all done by hand. My most favorite gift I ever gave anyone for Christmas was after we moved to the lake. I surprised my husband with a portable ice fishing house. He really likes it and uses it almost every day all winter long. And the benefit to me is that we get to eat fresh fish quite often.

This year I am giving my little granddaughter a set of waffle weave headbands, 14 different colors, and flower clips to wear on the headbands. I took apart the flowers, reglued them, added glitter glue and a large jewel in the middle. Added the clip and I must say they are darling! So excited to give them to her!

I guess the best Christmas gift I’ve ever given was to my daughter before she was born. Right before Christmas(about 7 months pregnant) I left her father because it was the smart and right thing to do. Knowing I had to make choices for someone else finally gave me the courage to do it. When times get rough I know I can stand tall!

wow, would i ever love that binding tool! binding is definitely my sore spot…
my favorite christmas gift, i would have to say, is a quilt i made for my boyfriend for christmas. he picked out his favorite colors and his only requirement was that is be “soft”. So the back was quilter’s flannel and the front was silks and satins… hand-pieced and hand-quilted through several different countries across six months. it was my own pattern, english paper-pieced, and was the quickest full-sized quilt i’ve ever finished… not because it was easy, but because i put a MASSIVE amount of time into it (and had a lot of airport waiting). it might be me favorite quilt i’ve ever made, and probably is my favorite christmas gift i’ve ever given.

I can year round so I usually give a basket with all that I have canned. this year will be: prickly pear jelly, pomegranate jelly, apple butter, jalapeno jelly, peach jam, bottled apple pie filling, bottled pears and peaches, bottled green chili, they are heavy but the uhs and awes are so worth the hard work all year round.

A super giveaway and I could really do with that binding tool. The best present I gave was an album I made for my Dad last year. We went on a family road trip through 12 States of America and my parents really wanted me to visit the ‘Crystal Cathedral’ in Orange County LA which I did and took a few photos for them. I made up a little scrapbook of these photos which took a few late nights including Christmas eve but it was so worth my parents reaction to it. They hadn’t seen the photos until then.
Enjoyed reading about the quilt you gave your parents. Very cool.

Many years ago I made my inlaws acounted crossed stitched map of the United States with different little symbols on each state, like the state bird and flower. It was massive and took forever. What was special about this was at that time they owned a motel and I added a little red arrow to point to where the motel was and a “You are here”. It hung in the lobby for years and the quests would like to point out where they came form.

I worked all year on a scrapbook for my mom with all the pictures she had been collecting over the years (with good intentions of doing something with them). It had pictures from when my brother and I were just babies up to current. She was so surprised she cried. I could have never purchased something that would have been so special to her.

This year I am making a doll crib set and an apron for my 3 year old, I think this may be my best Christmas present that I’ve given, well I hope! I struggle with buying things but having a little one to give to is certainly more fun.

  257. Bunny December 4, 2009 at 12:50 pm #

This is going to sound silly, but the best gift I ever gave someone is a rock I found at the beach. It had colourful streaks in the stone and it was beautiful. So I gave it to my brother for Christmas, and he kept it for years, all through college and even when he went away to work for the Armed Forces. Currently it’s here at our childhood home. :)

What a lovely giveaway! This is my first year making gifts, so I think that my fave gift will end up being the scarf I’m knitting for my mom!

  259. Catlin December 4, 2009 at 12:51 pm #

Great fabric! I made a little package of some of my favorite things to give to my husband when we were just first dating, so he could get to know me better. I thought it was a fun gift to give!

  260. Elizabeth December 4, 2009 at 1:34 pm #

The favorite gift I’ve given was a robe I made for my dad last Christmas! Thanks for the giveaway!

  261. Vanessa December 4, 2009 at 1:49 pm #

The favorite gift ever given was definitely my mom’s wedding scrapbook album I made for her. It was a total surprise!! Thanks for the chance to win!

  262. Grace December 4, 2009 at 2:07 pm #

lovely fabric…I’m hoping what I give this year will be the best. I’m making my own calendars with small gifts or notes for each month :) Happy holidays!

  263. Renee G December 4, 2009 at 2:40 pm #

That would have to be the crocheted afghan I made in high school to keep my boyfriend warm.

  264. Angela O. December 4, 2009 at 4:01 pm #

I think I had that same pair of giant pink glasses!!!

My favorite holiday gift was a scrapbook I made for my grandparents of all of their grandkids. My grandpa had cancer and was in the hospital on Christmas day. We brought it to him and he really seemed to enjoy looking at all the photos of us kids and ones with him and us together. It is a memory that, while sad that he was in the hospital, I hold very near and dear because we were together and I was able to give them something special and personal. Sadly, he passed away that following year, so that was the last Christmas we got to spend with him, which makes the memory even more special. My grandma still cherishes that scrapbook, which really warms my heart. Oh, now I’m getting all weepy at the special memory of a happy time! Thanks for the great question.

  265. Shirley December 4, 2009 at 4:10 pm #

Maybe the sled we gave my son when he was little because he really wanted it!

  266. Page Borski December 4, 2009 at 5:06 pm #

My favorite gift that I ever gave was probably a quilt that I made for my mother-in-law a few years ago. She had just had brain surgery to remove 2 tumors and I made a quilt with pictures (similar to yours) of our family. It just recently came home with me since she died a couple of months ago. But, I’m glad she had it for the last few years of her life.

  267. Rebecca A December 4, 2009 at 6:27 pm #

I love giving baby quilts for my nieces and nephews first Christmas.

  268. Sandra December 4, 2009 at 8:53 pm #

I give quilts and baby blankets to keep folks warm and cozy. I love praying for them as I’m making the folk coverings…people seem to enjoy receiving them too.

  269. Genevieve December 4, 2009 at 9:07 pm #

I gave my friend a origami shark once because her favorite animals are (get this!) Sharks and Kittens! Ha! :)

  270. Lynn Osborne December 4, 2009 at 9:26 pm #

I made a scrapbook for my father with his mother’s old photos. It was a very sentimental thing and he cried. Then I cried! Thanks for the chance to win!

  271. Vicki K December 4, 2009 at 9:36 pm #

The very first gift I gave my boyfriend-eventually-husband was a motorcycle helmet. He was so impressed by how nice it was and the care it implied that he soon asked me to marry him. It’s hard not to be excited about quilts that you make for people you love, so another favorite gift was a birthday quilt I made for my dad. It is a very manly log cabin quilt (barn raising style) made up of 70 hearth fires, one for each year of his life that year.

  272. Ellyn December 4, 2009 at 9:42 pm #

your quilt is so special! & your giveaway is awesome! A couple of years ago, I was working part time & saved & saved to buy my hubby a leather recliner, which he had always wanted. The day they came to deliver it, I thought he was in the garage. Nope, he was in the front yard & he was trying to convince the delivery guy that he had the wrong house! Oy oy oy, no surprises here

  273. arlette December 4, 2009 at 9:48 pm #

My fave gift to give was a cross stitch table runner, but it’s going to change this year because I’m going to give to my mom a huge christmas quilt, it needs to be done!, I need to hurry!

  274. Melody December 4, 2009 at 10:16 pm #

One of my favorite gifts I have given was for my in-laws, last Christmas. I altered a tin and made a mini album to put inside, with a sweet poem about grandchildren on the front cover. Each page of the album had a photo of one of their grandchildren on it. They loved it! Unfortunately, one of the littler kids dropped it in a bowl of water a few months ago, and it’s ruined… so I’m making them a new one this Christmas! :)

  275. Candace Henderson December 5, 2009 at 1:07 am #

My favorite gift to give is the one I am going to make next!
    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  276. Abby December 5, 2009 at 7:11 am #

After I learned to quilt, I made cathedral window pillows for all the ladies in the family. It was felt great to give homemade gifts that I was proud of.

  277. Brookiej December 5, 2009 at 7:50 am #

    Binding tool looks delightful…I really don’t have many “helper” tools, so this would be a treat! :) My favorite gift I have given someone was a wood burning of a raccoon I made my grandparents. Sure, it was a little corny, but it still hangs at their house & makes me laugh when I see it. {it really was pretty good!! HA}

  278. Val Miller December 5, 2009 at 8:11 am #

my favorite gift … a crocheted blanket I made for my mom. Thanks !!

  279. beccy December 5, 2009 at 9:10 am #

I made my first every quilt last year for my mum for Christmas. I’m a fairly competent sewer, but the quilt took a lot of learning, toil, and hidden blocks! There is something about the reaction to a handmade gift, made genuinely with love and effort, that hands-down beats the reaction to a bought gift. It’s been on her bed all year (even when it got really hot in summer) and although it has flaws, and is by no means the best piece of sewing I’ve ever done, it made me feel the best to give it.

Thanks for the great giveaway, I love the American Jane fabric too (I wish it were on sale more often!) and I’ve never used a binding tool – exciting!

  280. Lynne December 5, 2009 at 11:08 am #

My favorite gift was a knit lace weight scarf I made for my mom. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  281. Andrea December 5, 2009 at 12:01 pm #

Well, it’s a toss-up. The first Christmas my now-husband and I were together I knit him an Icelandic sweater (my first). He went out with some friends the day before Christmas and I hauled it out to finish the neckline, his Mom looked at it and whispered “Did you *make* that? For my David?” and started to tear up and I knew I was *in!*

And, there’s also the time when I was about five when I gave my beloved Dad the most useful, special little thing I could think of – his very own tiny tin of Bayer aspirin. I’m sure it came in handy (four girls in my family), and I really did love that little box, and eventually it took on legendary status as one of those great family stories – but as a Mom myself now I laugh every time I think about him unwrapping it and trying to act excited and appreciative!

  282. Rachel December 5, 2009 at 1:27 pm #

My favorite gift I made was a scarf for my husband — It was the first year we were married and I worked so hard to finish it on Christmas Eve that my shoulders hurt all day on Christmas. Worth the sacrifice of a little pain as he is still wearing it 6 years later!

    Great giveaway!

  283. mab December 5, 2009 at 3:13 pm #

The best gift I ever gave… we were living overseas at the time and unexpectedly came home for the holidays. My oldest daughter was 5 months old and hadn’t met my family yet. Since the plane tickets were so expensive, we couldn’t really get any gifts. But, we brought them a baby. They didn’t notice anything else, anyway!

Your quilt is really beautiful and I’m sure it’s a treasure for your parents. Oh, and I also had a Cabbage Patch Kid (ok, 10 of them) and huge glasses. Mine were brown. My mom picked them out for me. Then I could finally pick my own and I chose red. Why, I’ll never know….!

Thanks for the chance to enter!

  284. Melissa December 5, 2009 at 3:18 pm #

Your jewel quilt is beautiful. My fav gift ever to give is a cardinal quilt I make for my grannie. She just loves those birds. Come enter my drawing too.

  285. Betsy December 5, 2009 at 4:15 pm #

One of my favorite gifts ever was giving my husband an iPhone. He’d wanted one for awhile, but I kept saying “no, we can’t afford it.” When he opened the box, he was speechless and then said “Are you serious?!?” It’s so fun to surprise someone I love!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  286. Kimberly December 5, 2009 at 4:47 pm #

It’s not very creative, but every year I love giving photo books to my parents and my in-laws. I know they look forward to getting them and they’re so rewarding to make.

  287. Kristin December 5, 2009 at 5:01 pm #

When I was in seventh grade, I sewed a frog in my sewing class that was essentially a beanbag. I gave it to my great grandmother’s friend, and he loved it so much that he kept it in his house until he passed away a few years ago. I had no idea about this until my grandma told me about it later. It really made me so happy that it meant so much to him — I gave it to him and just hoped at the time he wouldn’t laugh or say “…what is this for?”. Instead, he loved it. It still makes me tear up when I think about it! Definitely the best feeling I’ve ever had :)

  288. Sarah December 5, 2009 at 5:33 pm #

My favourite gift is actually one I’m about to give — I made a dog bed for some friends who have been waiting for years for the right time to adopt a puppy — and they just did. So the cute little girlie gets a new, custom-made bed :)

  289. Sally December 5, 2009 at 6:30 pm #

I’ve been wanting to make a quilt, but I have been holding back partly due to the thought of making binding. I would love to win the fabric and the tool…then I would have no excuse!

  290. Laurie K Green December 5, 2009 at 8:04 pm #

My favorite gift was an oil painting of a lighthouse that I purchased at an art show and gave it to my mom. I bought it with the money I made at my first real job.

  291. Eve Nicole December 5, 2009 at 8:18 pm #

Last year I gave my son a knitted hat, and he wore it everyday. When anyone commented on his hat, he pr0udly would tell them that his momma made it. I was surprised he loved a humble knitted hat so much. Now it is a tradition, I make a hat for everyone in the family each Christmas.

  292. beth December 5, 2009 at 8:34 pm #

I love your Christmas quilt for your parents and the story to go with it! One year my husband and I worked on a doll house for my daughter. He built a simple two story doll house and I painted all kinds of things all over it! We still have it and will someday be watching our grandkids play with it.

  293. Misty.Creek December 5, 2009 at 9:27 pm #

The best gift I ever gave was a Grandma’s brag book for my mom. It took a while, but it was so cute! Now it just needs to be updated with 3 more grandbabies.

  294. Tiffany Hanks December 5, 2009 at 9:41 pm #

My favorite gift I can think of now was letting my mom know I was pregnant. She wanted the movies Juno and Baby Mama, so I made it like a book…

Piece of Paper taped on top said “Did”
turn the page and see the movie Juno (you know)
turn the movie and see a piece of paper “that I’m going to be a”
turn the page and see movie “Baby Mama”

    Yeah corny but funny :)

  295. Barb December 5, 2009 at 10:02 pm #

We got my daughter a play kitchen last year for CHristmas and she loved it! She plays with it all of the time!

  296. Shannon December 5, 2009 at 10:50 pm #

Very fun question! Possibly the insanely large/complicated pieced bear-paw duvet cover I made with my mom for then-boyfriend, now husband, just for the wonderful time my mom and I spent together. I don’t think he was as impressed with it as we were (but I still married him anyway!)

  297. seemommysew December 5, 2009 at 11:45 pm #

What a special quilt! My favorite gift I’ve ever given is also a quilt, for my then 3 year old. He was so excited, dancing around, it made all the time well worth it!

My favorite gift I gave was a quilt I made for my husband. It was a stack and whack quilt with a fish and sailboat theme. He was in the Navy for many years and loves the ocean.

My favorite gift was one I gave my boyfriend very early in our relationship – I bought Ralph Lauren bedding (from Ross/TJ Maxx) and then made curtains, and painted pictures to coordinate with it.

  302. Jingle December 6, 2009 at 9:49 am #

I made a really simple, yet, totally ‘her’ framed piece for my Mom last year and she LOVED it. Her joy in receiving the gift made it one of my favorite gifts to give EVER!

Wonderful giveaway. My favourite gift would have to be the madebyrae pattern buttercup bags I’ve made for my sisters-in-law (one each) for Christmas. I’ve only just recently learnt to sew and I’m having so much fun. I can’t wait to see what they think.

When my first daughter was little, I gave her a beautiful red velvet dress that my grandmother had made for me when I was little.

  312. Kimberly December 6, 2009 at 6:44 pm #

It wasn’t a big gift but I love the shirt I stenciled for my husband last year. He’s a huge fan of bacon (I once gave him 5lbs as a gift-he loved it!) So I made him a shirt that said, “I put bacon on my bacon”. He wears it all of the time. He didn’t even realize I made it until the 3rd or 4th time he wore it and someone asked me where I got it and I told them I made it. :P
    Thanks for the giveaway!
