Operation Ugly Pillow

February 9, 2012

I think 2012 is going to be The Year of the Pillow for me. For many reasons (namely the fact that they are fast and fun to make), but mostly because we bought couches that came with hideous pillows. Don’t believe me? Take a gander:

See? I told you. Maybe they aren’t hideous to someone else, but they certainly don’t fit our style. And the stuffing isn’t that great either. (Translation: they are headed straight for the garage sale!) But the couch? Oh, how we love the couch!

When we sold our last house, we also sold all of our living room furniture. We hunted and hunted for a couch that wasn’t crazy expensive, had clean lines and was a dark gray (so that pretty much any quilt would look great on it, naturally!). After eight shopping trips around Kansas City, we finally found one that we loved. In fact, we loved it so much that we bought two!

So I have four ugly pillows! Yippee!

In keeping with my “sew things that aren’t all business related” mantra, I took a stack of Hope Valley fat quarters with me to a recent Sewing Day for the KC MQG. I walked out with rows of half square triangles ready to be sewn together. I came home on a mission and before I went to bed that night, I had a finished pillow front!

I love being able to sit in our living room, seeing things that are handmade. Right down to the quilts inside the bookshelves.

This little pet project will be a great way to use up my stash and try out different styles. My dream is a closet shelf full of pillow case options, since pretty much any color looks great on that gray.

Right now, though, I’ll just settle for three more.

Edited to add: Wow! Apparently everyone is in the market for gray couches with nice lines! I have had several e-mails asking about our couches. The brand is Alan White and they are this model. If you are here in Kansas City, you can find them at NFM. Hope that helps!

At first I though the first picture was the ugly pillow, and I thought you had a screw or 2 loose….lol. It is beautiful! And, yes, the old ones are beyond ugly. They are hideous!!! Nice couches!

While I don’t think the original pillows are hideous, I do think they are incredibly boring and add absolutely nothing to your room. I adore the ones you made though! They are perfect.
