Easy “Handmade” Valentines

February 14, 2013

One of the best parts about having young kids is getting to help them make Valentines for their friends.

One of the not-so-best parts about having young kids is getting to help them make Valentines for their friends.

Thank goodness I had a mid-game brainstorm this week.

Our oldest, Eleanor, is four and a half. Her dream is to be “an artist and a mommy” when she grows up and she set out to draw a picture for all 16 members of her preschool class. Including writing ‘Happy Valentine’s Day From Eleanor’ on them. You can see where this is going.

I let her go about her work for a while and when she was getting tired of the idea, I made a suggestion. And I fully plan on this being my default for all Valentines in the future!

This is what her Valentines looked like today at school.

And now for a little truth in advertising….

For anyone who would want to do something similar, here’s what I did:

Take the artwork and scan it into the computer.

Use a program (I used Photoshop) to do any scaling necessary to fit the elements on one page. I did have to use the magic wand on the outer portions of the images to get rid of a gray rectangle ‘edge’ they had from the scanner.

Print. Enjoy. And pat yourself on the back, because now you have time for making this:

A Valentine box that says, “Take that, Pinterest!”

So, ‘frum’ Eleanor (and me)….’Hapy Valentins’ Day, friends.

I love everything about this post! I too love to make valentines with my 3 girls, but it can quickly get frustrating when those grand ideas don’t go as planned. We kept it simple this year and made cards with thumbprint hearts Ed Emberly style. Simple, easy, and most of all fun for all of us. Congrats on keeping it fun for your little one, she looks very proud :)

From now on, I kinda think from should always be spelled with a “u”!

I love them! Such a clever idea to scan and multiply when she was nearing the end of her interest. And the “Take that, Pinterest!” That made me crack up. :)

Also, I never noticed how much your Eleanor and my niece, Ella (6) look alike. Same sort of smile, same color hair, similar hair cut. Kinda fun to see. :)

I like the shades of aquas and greens with some yellow in a baby/toddler quilt -
It always fits – boy or girl – and it can grow with the child – Thanks for the chance.

I think a soft lime and yellow would be lovely or peach and turquoise, but I want to use this pattern to make a patriotic quilt for Quilts of Valor for our Veterans!

I love baby quilts in lavenders and greens for girls and yellows and greens for boys. I am always looking for quick easy and lovely quilt patterns that make it look like I works really hard. Love your pattern.

I just love how the same quilt looks so different with a different color way! I am working on a baby quilt now. Well actually two because I don’t know if I’m about to have a niece or a nephew! For a little boy, I love the bright yellow and gray combo.. For a little girl, I’m leaning towards aqua, lime green and a touch of pale orange. Really love fresh youthful color combinations! Really enjoyed your post! Thanks!
