Busy Blocks & the Modern Baby Blog Tour

Modern Baby book, modern baby quilt

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Modern Baby, a new release from Martingale. I have a quilt in this book, which marks the first quilt I’ve submitted for inclusion in a book. (yay!) Read through to the end for a chance to win a free eBook copy of Modern Baby!

My quilt, Busy Blocks, is a such a great quilt for a beginner and a fast finish quilt for an experienced quilter. Squares and half-square triangles. Easy as that. My goal was to design a quilt that could grow with a baby, both in color and design. An added bonus? If you wanted to make the quilt larger, simply increase the size of the basic square units and the quilt scales right up to any size you’d want, while retaining the exact same look as the baby quilt. I love designs that can do that!

Modern Baby quilt, easy baby quilt

It is also a fun design to try out a variety of free motion quilting designs. I quilted this one myself on my mom’s long arm, using a different design for each color grouping. The book sample I made is entirely made up of Kona solids, with the specific colors listed in the book.

In all of my printed patterns, I like to show the design in multiple colorways or fabric choices. I think it’s helpful to see each design in a totally different light. And Busy Blocks got the same treatment. Here it is in soft, pastel girly prints.

modern baby quilt, easy modern quilt

I will always remember this quilt and its timing in my life. We’d just learned that we were expecting our third child at the same time I was working to complete the quilt. That could partly explain my desire to make the quilt in two color schemes…. we are one of those ‘crazy’ couples that waits until the baby is born to learn the gender! Now, we have cutie pie, four month old Rhett. One day, when this quilt returns to me, I’ll get to take his photo on it!

Want to win a copy of the eBook version of Modern Baby? You’re in luck! Martingale is giving one away to one of my readers. Leave a comment below telling me your favorite color combination to use in baby/toddler quilts (other than pastel blue and pink!). I’ll pick the winner one week from today- Friday, April 26th.

You’ll want to check in at all of the stops on the tour. Consider it one big, traveling baby shower. Each blog offers a different chance to win an eBook!

I love your quilt. I’ve used green and blue in two baby quilts mostly because I thought using the right shades it can go either way. I recently did a pillow in gray and yellow though and loved it so I think my next baby quilt will have to be in those colors.

I just finished a baby quilt in brights, blues, yellows, oranges, reds and white. Also, I recently purchased some beautiful lime green and gray fabric that I’m going to create into a child’s quilt.

  25. Ele W. April 19, 2013 at 8:29 am #

I mostly love to use any bright or jewel tones, as many babies respond to the lively colors a lot. Gives them exercise in reaching and grabbing, not to mention catching drools.

  26. Gai Butler April 19, 2013 at 8:55 am #

Congratulations on you contribution to the book, a great achievement. Colours that I’m loving at this moment are tangerine, lemon & yellow with, for a girl, strawberry and pink and for a boy, lime and green, both on a white background. Yummy!

  27. Cindy Wienstroer April 19, 2013 at 9:03 am #

I have made many baby quilts – muted blues, reds & yellow; green & pink; pink & brown; primary colors: soft greens & blues with touch of yellow; next one will be grays, b&w, with small pops of colors like spring flowers.

  30. Leslie April 19, 2013 at 9:07 am #

This looks like a fun book!
I like to use brights for baby quilts. I’m working on 2 now, one with primary brights and one with bright blue and green.

  31. kathy h April 19, 2013 at 9:11 am #

I don’t really have just one color combination that I use for baby quilts (other than the traditional blue and pink). I like to use the colors of the sports teams that the couple cheer on. Then when they wrap up the baby or toddler to go to the game, they are all set.

  32. Arlene Thomas April 19, 2013 at 9:12 am #

I love greens, especially ones that are on the yellow side. mixed with white or cream

  33. dawn April 19, 2013 at 9:17 am #

I love the simple but effective design of your baby quilt. Very versatile…as a baby quilt or a full size quilt…using different colors also give it a different look. Great!

  34. Nancy April 19, 2013 at 9:18 am #

Great pattern, one I will use for the next baby quilt in shades of lavender and rose and gold. The last one I made, for a grandson, was in shades of yellowy-green and yellow and light blues with a little lavender, a great neutral. I learned that when I had no purple in my stash and it was my granddaughter’s favorite color. So now………………..Lots of Purple in all shades and it finds it way into every quilt I make.

  35. Karen F April 19, 2013 at 9:22 am #

aqua or turquoise with pink orange and grey. Lime green rasberry and black for my youngest grandaughter and I still like a red and white with some touches of green and blue that I made long ago. (and still have a UFO top that I made from the leftovers.)

  36. Peggy Tanler April 19, 2013 at 9:22 am #

I am expecting a new grandson this summer. His room is painted grey and yellow. The accessories are orange. I hope to see a quilt in your book to use the color scheme.

  37. Diane V April 19, 2013 at 9:35 am #

I don’t really know what is popular right now for baby quilts, but right now I am leaning towards the grays with either yellow or green highlights… Especially if you don’t know what the baby is yet. Thanks for the opportunity of winning this cute book.

  38. Jane Brown April 19, 2013 at 9:35 am #

Navy blue and chartreuse green are my colors to use for a baby.

  39. Hope Beatty April 19, 2013 at 9:35 am #

  42. Janet H April 19, 2013 at 9:40 am #

I fell in love yesterday when I saw your quilt in my Martingale email! Absolutely stunning and as you say – can be so flexible. If colors are not requested I normally use bright bold colors with the opposing pastel. This pattern is perfect for this. When baby grows it can be used to show colors – dark and light.
Can’t wait to get this pattern and book!

  43. Tamie April 19, 2013 at 9:41 am #

Im getting ready to use aqua, grey and yellow.

  44. Liberty April 19, 2013 at 9:43 am #

Sounds like a great book! Can’t wait to see it.
I love making baby quilts in bright schemes – I often include turquoise and yellow- or red (gender neutral) – and when it’s for girls or boys specifically I like an analogous color scheme – melon, yellow, pink or turquoise, green, blue

  45. Shawn April 19, 2013 at 9:44 am #

I like to use bright primary colors on baby quilts. I just finished a fun quilt with royal blue, lime green, orange and black. The black sashings make the other colors pop and I am thrilled with how it came out. I love your pattern because it allows you to really play with colors. Thanks for sharing,

  54. Jackie MacGregor April 19, 2013 at 10:44 am #

Love you quilt design!! I like yellow, aqua and gray together for baby quilts! Thanks for the giveaway!

  57. Hallie April 19, 2013 at 11:26 am #

Your pattern is darling, I would love to win the book :)

  58. ~Michelle~ April 19, 2013 at 11:35 am #

Well, put me in the crazy camp too, because hubby & I waited to find out until our sweet girl was born. I’m still 100% in the neutral grellow camp for baby quilts. Actually, I just made a nursery pillow in aqua & dark peacock for a little girl (I threw in the tiniest pops of pink), so that was a fun twist to not make something so ooey-gooey girlie.

  59. Christine April 19, 2013 at 11:44 am #

My favorite colors for a baby quilt are aqua blue and brown. There are so many beautiful prints/etc in aqua that I have quite a collection. I have two grandbabies coming this year so I have sent these wonderful “Modern” baby quilts example to my girls for them to choose what they want. Of course they will have a say in fabric selection — I’ll find out if I get to use my favorites.

  60. Kalynn April 19, 2013 at 11:47 am #

Thanks for the giveaway! Love the patterns – so much energy – color combinations are limitless.

  65. Mary R April 19, 2013 at 12:43 pm #

I like to make baby quilts in teals with either blues and greens for a boy or pink and green for a girl. Kind of different….

  66. Robbin Golden April 19, 2013 at 12:53 pm #

Aqua, turquiose, or teal and brown are my favorite combinations for two color quilts. If I use more than two, red, black with accents of primary colors is engaging for babies and toddlers. I’ve found your quilts and quilting inspiring!

  67. Bonnie Goodrich April 19, 2013 at 12:56 pm #

I like to use bright, vibrant colors – reds and yellows are my favorites.

  70. Colleen April 19, 2013 at 1:25 pm #

It might be a bit offbeat, but I like unexpected combinations, like orange and teal.

  71. Mary Jordan April 19, 2013 at 1:27 pm #

This is hard because I like to personalize the quilt to the baby’s family. I don’t make a quilt for all baby showers or announcements I receive. I have found that if I make the quilt to fit the baby’s room today, the quilt will be put away once the room is updated from newborn to toddler. For this reason I gravitate towards colors that will stimulate the baby today and one that can grow with them – especially the quilts for boys. I want the quilt to be one that is toddler friendly. I just finished a quilt for a baby boy that lives in Maine. I used the train panel for the center and used lots of color for the borders – wanted it to be bright and cheerful because where this family lives can tend to have lots of gray days. Another baby quilt that is on my table to be quilted is for a girl and this one I choose the newer trendy colors of aqua, orange, green and browns since this family is more trendy than traditional in the styles they choose. I love the simple blocks in Shea’s design and will give those a try – right now panels have been my lifesaver between working full time and getting my garden in, time is precious.

  72. Paula April 19, 2013 at 2:08 pm #

Pink and orange for girls and blue and greens for boys. Congrats on the book. I’ll have to buy it if I don’t win it. ;)

  73. Cheryl April 19, 2013 at 2:21 pm #

Congrats!!! The last baby quilt I made for a little girl was coral, peach, aqua & olive and for a little boy was red, blue, gray and white. They both turned out very nicely.

  74. Nancy Green April 19, 2013 at 2:23 pm #

I like using green & purple in baby quilts–soft or bright, depending on parental preference. I have one to make for a friend’s daughter who is expecting in a few of months and I would love to have this book for inspiration!!

  75. ritainalaska April 19, 2013 at 2:31 pm #

shades of yellow for baby girls and shades of green for baby boys works for me, but my grandaughter asked for blue and shades of grey to black for her baby boy. and that may be a new favorite.

  76. SueAnn Wirick April 19, 2013 at 2:33 pm #

I have a little boy quilt to make and it will be in earth tones as requested by the Mom and Dad. I might add a bear or 2 to it also.

  77. MarciaW April 19, 2013 at 2:44 pm #

My favorite color combination to use in baby/toddler quilts is bright! I like bright green, aqua, orange, red, yellow, prints, stripes, and dots. Then, if want to be more gender specific, can add either a bright blue or bright pink. I love windmill blocks and also snowball blocks with lots of contrast.

  85. Barbara April 19, 2013 at 4:48 pm #

I see this quilt in a variety of bright florals for the wheels and a coordinating solid for the center square. That would work for a baby size or for a bigger one. I loved seeing your color choices in this great pattern.

  110. usairdoll April 20, 2013 at 12:17 am #

Love your quilt! This big kid can see me making this for me, hehe. I love when I see quilts made up in two different colorways, you know us visual people. We also waited to find out what gender our kids were. We did great, a boy and a girl. I have only made one baby quilt and I used a themed fabric of jungle animals. I used bright fabrics as well, yellow, blue, green, red and white.

Thank you and Martingale for an awesome giveaway and a chance to win.

We are from the crazy find out when it arrives people too. I had a feeling and hope our Little Miss was a Little Miss and was delighted. If I was making quilts for the unknown sex baby I would love to use Red and Blue and White (classic and timeless and with minimal white not hard to keep clean with bubs), I have also seen really lovely citrus tone quilts with grey (Yellow, Orange & Lime with grey)

  112. Pat V. April 20, 2013 at 12:32 am #

I love to use bright colors, red, orange, green, blue, yellow – get that baby excited!

  113. Tracy DVR April 20, 2013 at 12:51 am #

  116. Anne O'Connor April 20, 2013 at 7:12 am #

I have just finished one a srtip or row quilt for a new baby using an owl print. I used the soft blue/green and coral orange in the print together with a strong deep aqua to tie it all together.

  117. Diane April 20, 2013 at 7:17 am #

My go to colors are grey and yellow! Or a polka dot with multicolored as second!

  118. lee April 20, 2013 at 7:29 am #

I love Navy and Orange or Lime Green and Navy! thanks!

  119. D. K. April 20, 2013 at 7:35 am #

My favorite quilt choices are brights. This year I’m looking for colors that work for a boy or girl- maybe yellow and aqua or green and brown.

  120. Hilary April 20, 2013 at 8:13 am #

I’ve made two quilts for a neighbours twin girls and made one using aqua, pink and red and the other in red, brown and aqua.

  121. Barb Schneider April 20, 2013 at 8:18 am #

Sometimes I use primary colors, other times I go with mint green, yellow, peach. But, one of my favorite baby quilts was done with turquoise, various greens, light blues with a sea theme. How can you not love a baby quilt in any color!

  122. carla bynum April 20, 2013 at 8:32 am #

Hi!!!! I love the soft greens, aqua and oranges!!!!

  123. Ellee April 20, 2013 at 9:04 am #

  124. Lani G April 20, 2013 at 9:30 am #

My favorite colors for baby quilts are red, blue and yellow, or orange, yellow and green. I love your pattern, definitely a new admirer here!

  125. Susan K April 20, 2013 at 10:40 am #

If I know the sex of the baby and/or the colors in the nursery, that’s the colors I use. I like the scrappy look for babies as that can hide a lot of stains and isn’t “too baby” for use into their toddler years. My favorite colors are blues and greens, so I love the boy colorway in this quilt!

  126. Cecilia April 20, 2013 at 10:41 am #

I like using primary colors, but I also like aqua and red. I like your quilt, especially the simplicity of it. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the book.

  127. Cecilia April 20, 2013 at 10:49 am #

I love the simplicity of your quilt. I really like to use primary colors in my baby quilts. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of your book.

  128. Nancy Noah April 20, 2013 at 10:57 am #

I like to use what I have always called “crayon brights” when making baby and children’s quilts. I love using these intense colors.

  129. Lou April 20, 2013 at 1:10 pm #

Your quilt is awesome! I like to use a print to go with the baby’s parents’ theme, and then use complementary colors. But, if on my own, I like the turquoise, deep yellow and hint of hot pink and grey…kinda funky ;-)

  130. Bonnie Brodmerkle April 20, 2013 at 2:08 pm #

I love all colors for all baby quilts and in almost any combination! What I do LOVE to do with most of my baby quilts is to add a black and white fabric as the accent color. It just adds that little “something”!

  131. Sharann Watson April 20, 2013 at 2:17 pm #

I love using bright primary colors for baby quilts. Although your pastel “girl” quilt is very sweet. Congrats on your pattern.

  133. Gayle Grier April 20, 2013 at 9:11 pm #

  134. Mom C April 20, 2013 at 9:23 pm #

My favorite was a scrappy flannel quilt. I sashed it with purple (!) so the scraps actually looked like wonky windows. I really liked the way it turned out. Thanks.

  135. Nancy B from Many LA April 20, 2013 at 9:39 pm #

I haven’t made one yet, but have my first grandchild coming; I’m waiting to hear if it’s a boy or a girl. If it’s a girl, I think I’m making a purple/green quilt!

  139. Kathryn April 21, 2013 at 3:11 am #

I’m quite keen on a navy blue, lime green, white and orange combination at the moment!

  140. Barb Johnson April 21, 2013 at 8:18 am #

When I make a baby quilt for a specific person, I will find out what colors the mom wants, or what colors are used in the nursery. If I don’t know or can’t find out, I tend to use 30’s prints.
