Optical Illusions: a book, a quilt and a giveaway

Optical Illusions Book- Quilt Patterns

Welcome to my stop on the Optical Illusions book blog tour! Today I’m sharing a little about the work of a guild friend, Jessica Toye. Jessica is a pretty clever quilt designer (check out this one and you’ll see what I mean!) and also a long arm quilter. She recently quilted two quilts for me for the Parallels pattern book!

Check out Jessica’s quilt in the Optical Illusions book. It’s called Water Ripples and is a variation on the snowball block. Jessica used the Kaleido-Ruler for easier cutting and placed those fabrics in such a smart way. I love squinting at this quilt until it blurs. Try it yourself. I’ll wait here….

Water Ripples Quilt by Jessica Toye from Optical Illusions

Fun, right? It’s always neat to see the subtle changes that can be made to traditional blocks or fabric placements and choices that can use a block in such unique ways. Optical Illusions is full of quilts like that.

As part of my stop, leave a comment for a chance to win a large AND small Kaleido-Ruler set by Marti Michell! To enter: Tell me if you’ve ever used a specialty ruler before! Easy as that. I’ll randomly select a winner at noon on Monday, November 17th. (UPDATE: This giveaway has closed! The winner is Michele! Thanks to all who entered.)

  6. Joyce Carter November 14, 2014 at 8:55 am #

  7. Beth November 14, 2014 at 8:57 am #

I’ve loved that quite since I first saw the whole thing.

  8. Melissa E November 14, 2014 at 9:18 am #

The only ruler I’ve ever used is a plain old long straight one. It’s got some markings for diagonals and things, but I’ve never even tried those! I would love to try out a fancy pants ruler. :)

  9. Barb November 14, 2014 at 9:35 am #

Yes, I have used Jaybird’s hex and more and it was great! Thanks for the nice post and giveaway.

  10. Jane November 14, 2014 at 9:46 am #

I love specialty rulers and own and use many but would you believe not this one from Marti! Thanks for the chance.

  11. Gill November 14, 2014 at 9:46 am #

    I love Jessica’s quilt!
I’ve never used a speciality ruler, I only have squares and rectangles!

  12. Carina November 14, 2014 at 10:08 am #

I’ve only done simple quilts with squares and rectangles so far so I haven’t used a specialty ruler but look forward to trying them in the future

  13. Anita November 14, 2014 at 10:13 am #

Yes, I have used the Companion Angle, the Easy Angle, and Hex’ N More ruler.

  14. duff November 14, 2014 at 11:04 am #

No, I have not used a specialty ruler before. I’ve been tempted, that is all. I probably shouldn’t admit that…
I really want to get my hands on this book! thanks!

  15. Sarah D. November 14, 2014 at 11:20 am #

No specialty rulers in my arsenal (yet) …. guess I’m always preoccupied with fabric. :-)
The Water Ripples quilt is amazing. Thanks for the chance to win.

  16. Michele Timms November 14, 2014 at 11:49 am #

Jessica’s Water Ripples quilt is gorgeous!! As for using specialty rulers… I havn’t experimented with any… at all! Maybe it is high time I do!!

  17. Lisa Tucker November 14, 2014 at 11:51 am #

I have used several specialty rulers, sometimes not so successfully but I keep trying.

  18. Nena November 14, 2014 at 12:03 pm #

I have never used a speciality ruler but I have rectangles and squares! Thanks for the chance! Love your website!

  19. Nicole November 14, 2014 at 12:05 pm #

Thanks for the tip about squinting. I like scrolling really fast up and down.

I borrowed a “stack and whack” ruler once to make triangles. That was NOT my favourite quilt ever, but that might also be because it was shades of beige.

I’m thinking about getting a dresden ruler but I’m waffling about what degree/size to get.

  20. Quilting Tangent November 14, 2014 at 12:12 pm #

No, I haven’t used a specialty ruler before, willing to try it.

  21. Delaine November 14, 2014 at 12:23 pm #

I have never used a specialty ruler before, but it is time that I did. This book looks awesome! Thanks!

  22. Andi Stanfield November 14, 2014 at 12:24 pm #

I used specialty rulers years ago – Eleanor Burns’ Flying Geese and a Marti Michell set of templates for a BOM. I am intrigued by Bonnie Hunter’s use of the Tri-Recs and Easy Angle rulers, so they are next on my list of purchases.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  23. Lisa Marie November 14, 2014 at 12:32 pm #

I have used several specialty rulers, most recently a Dresden ruler and a Twister ruler.

  24. Karen Thurn November 14, 2014 at 12:40 pm #

I’ve never used a specialty ruler before but I just bought Lori Holt’s circle rulers. I had been using a set of plates but was tired of cleaning off the pencil marks as I was tracing and cutting with scissors. This specialty ruler looks like it could be used for multiple shapes.

  25. Kim November 14, 2014 at 1:08 pm #

I have used a speciality ruler before and it’s driving me crazy right now that I can’t remember the name of it. Must check when I get home.

  26. Vicki H November 14, 2014 at 1:54 pm #

I have a Dresden ruler that I haven’t used yet.

  27. Ellen Ban November 14, 2014 at 2:20 pm #

  28. Joan Rodriguez November 14, 2014 at 3:02 pm #

I’ve used Julie Herman’s Hex N More ruler. It’s great! Luv this new book, gotta have it. :)

  29. Nancy N November 14, 2014 at 3:35 pm #

The specialty ruler that I use the most cuts setting triangles from strips of fabric. I like it so much I actually have tow of them.

  30. Becca B. November 14, 2014 at 3:59 pm #

Yes! I love them, but I hate buying them. All the ones I own I picked up as part of Saturday Samplers at my local quilt shop. I like some of the flying geese ones I’ve used a lot.

  31. Tabitha Keener November 14, 2014 at 6:15 pm #

I’ve never used a specialty ruler before mostly because I’m fairly new and at the beginning of my quilting adventure. I keep learning new things all the time and I at least know there are specialty rulers now and mostly what they are for! Thanks so much for the giveaway, I would love to win!

  32. Kell November 14, 2014 at 6:15 pm #

I have used a couple of specialty rulers before. Now I just need to use some of the other rulers I’ve bought. :)

  33. Kathy E. November 14, 2014 at 8:07 pm #

I have just bought a “wedge” template ruler, but I haven’t used it yet. (I need to finish a few other projects first). I’m new to the quilting world, so need to collect some rulers and templates!

  49. Diane Beavers November 15, 2014 at 8:08 am #

    Hi Shea,
    Yes I’ve used a specialty ruler…the 9 degree ruler.
Crafted a swirl table runner using that, it was scary cutting with it but the end result was impressive. Thanks for sharing your energy on this Blog Tour

  50. apple blossom November 15, 2014 at 8:09 am #

  52. Jessie Hansen November 15, 2014 at 2:42 pm #

I have not ever had the justification to buy a specialty sewing ruler. Alas, maybe someday. It’s not in the cards right now but someday, maybe. Of course, getting one for free I wouldn’t have to justify buying it, right? I would just have to justify getting to use.

  53. Mohamed Rezgui November 15, 2014 at 2:59 pm #

I haven t used one before

  54. Cindy Dahlgren November 15, 2014 at 4:42 pm #

I want to make a Kaleidoscope quilt really badly, and these would come in handy. I’ve used a Tri Recs tool, Dresden blade ruler, and some others that are escaping my mind right now. cdahlgren at live dot com
