Giveaway Day!

Hello there! Welcome, Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day visitors!

If you are new here, I’ll share a tiny bit about me before I cut to the chase and share about the giveaway.

I’m Shea Henderson. Wife to a handsome redhead and mom to three young and spunky mostly-redheads.

Shea Henderson

I love to sew clothes for my kids, quilts for friends and family, bags, accessories… you name it. Sewing brings me much fulfillment (and stress relief!). We are proud to call Kansas City, Missouri home. (Go, Royals!) Sugar cookie decorating is sort of becoming an obsession, too.

Sewing Machine Sugar Cookies from Empty Bobbin Sewing Studio

I’m also the owner of Empty Bobbin Sewing Studio (a sewing and quilt pattern business) and author of School of Sewing: Learn it. Teach it. Sew Together. The book follows along as I teach my eight friends and neighbors to sew, one lesson at a time, over the course of a year. It’s meant to be a book for beginners and also for those hoping to teach beginners. My favorite are the quotes and stories from my students, woven in throughout the book.

School of Sewing just won an awesome award and I could not be more thrilled and thankful! It’s the Gold Award winner in the Craft and Hobby category for the 2015 Ben Franklin Awards, given by the IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association). Woot! Look here to learn more about the book and watch the trailer!

School of Sewing Ben Franklin award

Now… about that giveaway! I’m giving away a copy of School of Sewing! (I will ship internationally for this giveaway!)

Psssst! I’m also giving away a copy each via my Instagram (@emptybobbin) and my business Facebook page. Check those spots throughout the day to try your luck there, too. I’ll chose one winner in each location on Wednesday, May 13th.

To enter: Tell me… which side do you identify with more: are you the beginner sewist? OR are you the one who wants to teach your friends and family to love the wonderful world of sewing like you do? Do tell! Note: Comments are set to moderated for first time commenters. So don’t worry if you don’t see your comment right away!

And one more thing! To celebrate the fantastic Giveaway Day fun, you can use the coupon code GIVEAWAY for 20% off all patterns in the shop between now and 5/13, too!

Thanks for stopping by!

I identify more with being a beginning sewer. I know how to sew, but still prefer to have guidance. I love the patterns that you have put out, they are very easy for me to follow!

  2. pickysewing May 6, 2015 at 9:27 am #

I’m an intermediate sewist. I have a lot to learn, but I am able to help others out.

  3. Allison Dey May 6, 2015 at 9:28 am #

Somehow I’ve managed to feel like a beginner who loves to teach sewing to anyone who’ll come near. I think that’s because I prefer hand sewing and I love to share the quiet and precision of the art. But when it comes to making something via the machine or with any real skill, I’m definitely in beginner’s mind. (I’m from KCMO, too! Congrats on your award!)

  4. Anita May 6, 2015 at 9:30 am #

I’m a fairly experienced sewiest with a ten year old daughter. I guess I’m the teacher. Thank you for the chance to win some teaching help, with my daughter.

  5. Debbie May 6, 2015 at 9:35 am #

I am a teacher by trade, but more of an intermediate sewist. I love seeing your patterns in the stores and I always have to comment (maybe a little too loudly for anyone near to hear) – that is my FRIEND Shea’s pattern!!

  6. Doris gosnry May 6, 2015 at 9:36 am #

Teacher to grown granddaughter who is interested after giving me 2 great grand children.

  7. Katy(LethargicLass) May 6, 2015 at 9:44 am #

You might want to move this to the shipping to US winners only section

    • Shea May 6, 2015 at 10:09 am #

Oh, gosh! I did put it under the wrong heading, didn’t I! Shoot! Thanks for the heads up. Since I made the goof, I’ll just leave it and change it to shipping internationally for this post. Thanks again!

    I am definitely a beginner.

  9. Lisa May 6, 2015 at 10:01 am #

  10. andrea May 6, 2015 at 10:07 am #

    I’m the beginner-just started sewing/quilting last year.

  11. Katie Trott May 6, 2015 at 10:13 am #

  12. Carla S May 6, 2015 at 10:19 am #

I identify with the beginning sewer. I just learned how to use a machine and just started quilting.

  14. Sarah in West Linn May 6, 2015 at 10:32 am #

I’ve been sewing for decades, but I’ve also been teaching girls in my neighborhood to sew, so this book is especially appealing. Thank you!

  15. Jeanne B May 6, 2015 at 10:32 am #

I’ve been sewing for 50 years, but am still learning. I could teach some things, but am not an expert. I am an encourager, though.

  16. Patti May 6, 2015 at 10:52 am #

I feel more like an intermediate sewist but definitely not ready to teach! LOL

  19. Ree G May 6, 2015 at 11:07 am #

I am experienced and try to convert 1 friend at a time over to the sewing world.

  20. Karie {Girl Going Country} May 6, 2015 at 11:09 am #

I am definitely a beginning sewist! Trying to work my way through your book right now and am trying to encourage more friends to join along with me. If I win, I would pay it forward since I already have a copy of my very own. :-)

  21. Anita L May 6, 2015 at 11:13 am #

I am more the teacher I guess. I have been sewing most of my life but I love collecting sewing books and learning new tips and tricks.

  22. Maria May 6, 2015 at 11:20 am #

I am a beginner, but I am already addicted to sew!

  23. Martina May 6, 2015 at 11:24 am #

I still feel a beginner sometimes but i also teach others what I learned.Lol!

  24. Sewing with Dragons May 6, 2015 at 11:57 am #

Beginning sewist! I’m still building my skills. Though I did teach a friend how to paper-piece, recently, so maybe I’m moving up!

  25. brooke May 6, 2015 at 11:58 am #

I am in the middle. I love to sew and feel like I have much to learn, but I am also way past the beginner stage and love new challenges.

  26. Julie V May 6, 2015 at 12:15 pm #

I’m definitely a beginner… still figuring it out as I go. Thanks for the opportunity!

  27. Rebekah S. May 6, 2015 at 12:29 pm #

I’m a beginner sewer, although I have crafted all my life! Trying to learn all I can…as quick as I can…

  28. Stephanie May 6, 2015 at 12:33 pm #

I am to the point now of the teacher side. I have quilting hard core for about 3 years now and have people ask me and have taught a few to sew.

  29. Monica May 6, 2015 at 12:35 pm #

I am the teacher and am often asked to teacher others my techniques.

  30. naehconnection May 6, 2015 at 12:46 pm #

Starting to teach friends and family…

  31. Jen Beatty May 6, 2015 at 12:57 pm #

I’m an intermediate sewer, but there are times I feel like a beginner depending on the project. I do know I learn something new w/every project, which is why I like to make quilts and bags.

  32. melissa May 6, 2015 at 1:42 pm #

I’d love to teach people. I feel like it would have really helped when I first started sewing.

  33. bekki May 6, 2015 at 1:45 pm #

I love your little sewing machine biscuits. They’re awesome! I’ve been sewing for a few years but I still feel like a beginner. There’s a lot I’d like to learn.

  34. Rose May 6, 2015 at 1:48 pm #

I’m trying to spread the love… just got my best friend to get a machine.. she’s addicted

  35. sherry May 6, 2015 at 2:04 pm #

i can and have taught but i like the solitude of my sewing room

  36. Janice May 6, 2015 at 2:07 pm #

I quilt all the time but don’t know how to sew. It’s pretty bad when people expect you to be able to fix clothes or make clothes just because you quilt.

  37. Deb May 6, 2015 at 2:09 pm #

I am a teacher. I would love a copy of this book to give to my DIL.

  38. haliegirl May 6, 2015 at 2:13 pm #

I feel like a beginning sewist, but I’ve found myself giving lessons to some of my friends. I suppose I’m in a transitional phase!

  39. maggielou May 6, 2015 at 2:23 pm #

I used to sew clothes when my daughter was in school now I make quilts. I am a beginner in sewing I think

  40. Laura May 6, 2015 at 2:54 pm #

I’m a beginner and could totally use this book!

  41. Debbie May 6, 2015 at 2:55 pm #

I’m more of a mentor/teacher. I’d love to have your book as a tool to help beginners – like my goddaughter and granddaughter…

  42. owllaughing May 6, 2015 at 2:55 pm #

Totally a beginner. I’ve completed several garment sewing projects, but I’m still far from even intermediate. So couldn’t pass this opportunity to win a book on sewing :)

  43. Heather O May 6, 2015 at 3:29 pm #

I am intermediate sewer, so I now have been teaching my friends.

  44. allisonsews May 6, 2015 at 3:34 pm #

I’d be more on the teaching side. I’ve heard great things about your book!

  45. Alison May 6, 2015 at 4:03 pm #

I am a total beginner who needs help!

  46. Barbara May 6, 2015 at 4:12 pm #

I’m definitely a beginner! I have so much to learn!

  47. Lucy F May 6, 2015 at 4:27 pm #

Teacher, though always seem to learn something new online!

  48. Cindy May 6, 2015 at 4:35 pm #

I can follow a pattern pretty well, but am always learning new techniques and easier ways of getting more professional results.

  49. kaloskraft May 6, 2015 at 4:52 pm #

I want to teach people to sew!

  50. Becca May 6, 2015 at 4:57 pm #

I’m an advanced beginner, I think. Pretty confident, but lacking accuracy and lacking more advanced skills and garment skills. Zippers still scare me a little, but I can piece quilts pretty well.

  51. Jessica @ Just a Mum? May 6, 2015 at 5:06 pm #

I’ve been sewing since I was a kid, but never really learned to do anything properly… so I’d say I’m a beginner with 25 years of experience. ;)

  52. Kristen May 6, 2015 at 5:07 pm #

I still consider myself a beginner.

  53. Lori Nicholas May 6, 2015 at 5:25 pm #

I’ve been sewing enthusiastically for years and love to recruit and encourage others. I’m always thrilled to learn new techniques and different ways to do things I’ve been doing. Thrilled to see your wonderful new book and keeping my fingers crossed!

  54. TV May 6, 2015 at 5:38 pm #

I’ve been sewing my whole life, but now that I have an eager toddler I’m getting to know the teaching side

  55. Diane Pfluger May 6, 2015 at 5:39 pm #

I have sewn for a long time but only done it obsesively the last 4 years

  56. Janice May 6, 2015 at 5:41 pm #

I guess I would be an advanced beginner. There is so much to learn.

  57. Susan Mitchell May 6, 2015 at 6:18 pm #

I am always offering to teach anyone who wants to learn. I tell people that I have an extra machine, a bajillion patterns, notions and fabrics all they have to do is COME OVER. I think it so fun and would love to have someone locally who sews too!

  58. Julia C K May 6, 2015 at 6:20 pm #

    I am totally a beginner.

  59. Alli May 6, 2015 at 6:27 pm #

I’m always happy to help if someone has questions! :)

  60. Heidi May 6, 2015 at 6:56 pm #

I’m more of a beginner…especially with clothing, which is what I want to sew.

  61. ronnie May 6, 2015 at 7:14 pm #

I’ve been sewing for a while, but no expert. I’d like to get a few of my friends sewing too.

  62. diane beavers May 6, 2015 at 7:40 pm #

Hello Shea! I’m just loving those Quilter Edition sugar cookies:) Just wanted to say Hi , as I’m a proud owner of your book from a past giveaway. The book is AWESOME and I refer to it daily.
I’m definitely the one teaching everybody I love and a few friends how to sew, and now straight line quilting!
Constantly I receive compliments on those lines on the various bags, baskets I’ve made using /your technique.
First quilt top is about ready to sandwich and then quilt.
Thank you so much for inspiring me.

  63. Taya@TypeB May 6, 2015 at 8:19 pm #

What a great idea for a book! I’m both a beginning clothes seamstress and a more experienced quilter. I’d love to teach my friend but most of them aren’t interested. Maybe your book could help :)

  64. Kay L May 6, 2015 at 8:27 pm #

Oh, I’m definitely a beginner. I’ve just returned to sewing from a 5-year hiatus and while I feel confident in the basic techniques there is still so much I need to learn!

  65. twocheekymonkeys May 6, 2015 at 8:36 pm #

I’m kind of between beginner and the experienced one teaching friends.

  66. Karen May 6, 2015 at 8:38 pm #

I guess I’m intermediate. There’s still so much to learn!

  67. Jess @ Quilty Habit May 6, 2015 at 8:41 pm #

I’m definitely a teacher at this point!

  68. Michelle Grable May 6, 2015 at 9:04 pm #

I really really really want to teach beginners!!!!

  69. bee May 6, 2015 at 9:11 pm #

i teach my friends all about what i’m quilting. :) i joke that my motto is ‘world domination, 1 quilter at a time!’ (but it really is true)

  70. Silvia Sutters May 6, 2015 at 9:19 pm #

I’m the one who wants to teach my friends! :)

  71. Tara Celeste May 6, 2015 at 9:45 pm #

I’m a bit of a teacher! I’ve taught a couple friends how to quilt and have plans to teach a few girls from church how to make key fobs soon :)

  72. stewartali May 6, 2015 at 9:53 pm #

I’m definitely a teacher. Teach middle school ELA and also seeing after school to some students. It’s great!

  73. Nicole May 6, 2015 at 10:03 pm #

I’m neither! I’m well past beginner but I have no desire to teach others. Quilting (and sewing) is MY thing, MY happy place. Go away and let me sew! Congrats on the award too.

  74. Michelle May 6, 2015 at 10:06 pm #

I am a look ng time sewist who wants to teach all my non sewing friends to sew. I also get asked for book recommendations often so I’m always on the lookout for good beginner books.

  75. Margaret May 6, 2015 at 10:17 pm #

I’m in between. I could (and would) teach the basics, like how to sew a straight seam and such, but I could never teach garment sewing.

  76. stanleybeagle May 6, 2015 at 10:26 pm #

    definitely beginner!

  77. Colleen May 6, 2015 at 10:50 pm #

I am the teacher and a beginning garment maker teacher to my 4 granddaughters and learning as I go making them cloths and costumes

  78. Devin May 6, 2015 at 11:07 pm #

I am teaching my cousin to sew. We just found out that my mom taught his mom how to sew 40 years ago.

  79. Heather May 6, 2015 at 11:09 pm #

I’d say I’m past beginner and would love to begin teaching my son and daughter. I love to share what I make.

  80. monica m. May 7, 2015 at 12:59 am #

I am the knitter who wants to learn another craft…in other words, super beginner! thanks for the opportunity!

  81. Pamela Dungar May 7, 2015 at 1:17 am #

I have been sewing from childhood but like to learn new techniques and ideas all the time.

  82. Maryse May 7, 2015 at 2:33 am #

I am no beginner, I have been sewing for years. I used to make clothes for me and my family and have been making quilts for the last 6-7 years. I enjoy sewing very much, but I’m not wired to be a teacher … :-))

  83. Birgit May 7, 2015 at 3:29 am #

    Hi Shea,

as I’m a beginner in sewing your book would be really helpful for me, as I love to sew for my granddaughter – err, yes, and for me, too ;)

  84. Emily C May 7, 2015 at 3:58 am #

I am more intermediate and I love to help my friends when they need sewing guidance.

  85. Cri Erre May 7, 2015 at 4:45 am #

  93. Amy Cavanagh May 7, 2015 at 7:59 am #

Definitely not a beginner but not a sewist either – I fall in between. My skills are good but loads more room for learning and improvement!

  94. Ruth Rowe May 7, 2015 at 8:31 am #

I am the person that my friends turn to when they want to start sewing or need help with a project. I love helping my friends discover the joy of sewing and creating.

  95. Stacie Aho May 7, 2015 at 8:37 am #

I am kinda both… I’m self taught and want to learn everything I can, but I also want to encourage everyone around me to try crafting. I just started a blog about it!

  96. Victoria T. May 7, 2015 at 9:23 am #

I’m definitely a beginner! I’m hoping to learn a lot as a get more practice. :)

  97. Tonia Jeffery May 7, 2015 at 9:32 am #

I’m not really a beginner and though I would love for my friends and family to learn to sew, I don’t really want to take the time to teach them. I am teaching my two girls (ages 4 and 5).

  98. Katelyn May 7, 2015 at 9:38 am #

Beginner. …I can give little bits of advice, but I have only been sewing for just over a year

  99. Linda Pawlak May 7, 2015 at 9:57 am #

I’m probably more of a beginner! Thanks for the chance to win!

  100. buntyw May 7, 2015 at 10:04 am #

I’ve been sewing for a long time but I still like learning new tricks!

  101. Jodi R May 7, 2015 at 10:14 am #

I would love to encourage others to give it a try but I probably don’t think I am qualified to teach as I still feel I have so much more to learn so I am stuck somewhere in the middle

  102. R.Kay May 7, 2015 at 10:28 am #

I am definitely a beginner seamstress and would love to get more tips.

  103. Leo May 7, 2015 at 10:37 am #

I can sew – but I don’t want to teach – I don’t have the patience, I mean I can’t even do paper piecing without a ton of breaks and chocolate for the nerves because it just takes soooo long and there is so much presssign involved. Though I am much more forgiving about not-matching seams when others do the sewing so maybe I have a future in teaching .. someday, wehn I’m a little older and more mellowed

  104. Peggy May 7, 2015 at 10:43 am #

I am the teacher that wants to teach everyone else! I taught high school for 10 years before staying at home with my girls, so it’s a natural tendency, I think!

  105. alexis May 7, 2015 at 11:12 am #

I’ve sewn for years but still feel like a beginner.

  106. Brenda May 7, 2015 at 11:56 am #

I’m more the teacher type. Actually, I’m a perpetual learner who loves to share with friends and folk who are interested.

  107. Skooks May 7, 2015 at 12:26 pm #

Oh, I’m definitely in the second camp! Although I don’t want to spend so much time teaching sewing that I don’t get to my own projects. ;)

  108. AngieSue May 7, 2015 at 12:28 pm #

I could pass along some quilting knowledge — but I’m definitely a beginner at every other kind of sewing.

  109. Mel J. May 7, 2015 at 12:34 pm #

I am definitely not a beginner, but I’m not an expert either – maybe intermediate level. Cookie decorating is also an obsession for me as well :)

  110. Donna Lee May 7, 2015 at 12:35 pm #

I’d love to teach my grandchildren how to sew!

  111. Amber May 7, 2015 at 1:03 pm #

I fall somewhere in between. I don’t feel like a beginner (unless its a technique I’ve never learned), but feel like I sew enough by instinct and guesswork that I wouldn’t be great at teaching people either!

  112. Samantha P May 7, 2015 at 1:10 pm #

    Totally a beginner.

  113. Sarah May 7, 2015 at 1:42 pm #

I would love to teach beginning sewing to others. Thanks for the chance to win!

  114. littlehouseonthedairy May 7, 2015 at 2:16 pm #

I am somewhere in between. I love to teach friends who are just starting out but I know there is still lots I can learn!

  115. mskhofhinn May 7, 2015 at 2:20 pm #

I love those cookies! When it comes to sewing I definitely am more on a beginner skill level wise but I’m also eager to share what I do know and spread the sewing obsession around.

  116. Dana May 7, 2015 at 2:24 pm #

After many years of sewing I’m definitely a teacher now :) Thanks so much for this great giveaway!

  117. Elizabeth S May 7, 2015 at 2:30 pm #

I definitely fall into the category of wanting to teach my friends to sew! I was lucky enough to have a mom who sewed all of our clothes growing up, and let me play freely on her machine with scraps, as well as teach wonderful techniques, tips, tricks and finishing skills (30+ years later, she still is teaching me ;) ). Now I love to teach all of my friends that sewing doesn’t have to be crazy hard and is something anyone can learn to do if they want! This book sounds perfect!

  118. Meg M May 7, 2015 at 2:39 pm #

I love to teach! I still feel new to this and like a beginner but I have now taught my two best friends to quilt with me!

  119. Yana May 7, 2015 at 2:45 pm #

I am not a beginner but not so advanced either, cuz I still have a lot to learn, but I’d love to teach everyone this wonderful art.

  120. Michele May 7, 2015 at 2:52 pm #

I’m one who teaches people to sew. Right now I’m hoping to get a busy friend back into sewing in her free time. She taught me how to quilt!

  121. Meg M May 7, 2015 at 2:53 pm #

OMG those cookies are amazing! I follow through email :)

  122. Marilyn May 7, 2015 at 4:26 pm #

More of the teacher. Recently gave my great nieces a beginning course in sewing.

  123. Joanne May 7, 2015 at 4:46 pm #

I think I fall somewhere in-between! lol Thanks for the chance to win!

I am very much a beginner, I just figured out how to turn my zig zag on :) I have so many ideas and things that I would like to be able to create. I just ordered your book should be delivered tomorrow, YAY!!!

  125. Sara May 7, 2015 at 5:27 pm #

I’m a teacher! I learned to sew as a child and have continued to challenge myself. Now I’m writing sewing patterns! But my daughter is learning to sew and just devours beginner craft books.

  126. Victoria May 7, 2015 at 6:06 pm #

I am the teacher but I am always ready to learn something new, This book looks like something I can use with my granddaughters.

  127. Lori Morton May 7, 2015 at 6:41 pm #

Am pretty much an Advanced Beginner…but I am always willing to share all sewing info I can….have two Daughter’s that sew…and I am teaching my Grangirlie now too! :)

  128. Andrea Staron May 7, 2015 at 7:05 pm #

I still think of myself as a beginner sewer, but I’ve been sewing for six years, and almost every day for the last three. But friends do come to me for sewing advice, and I sew most of my own clothes, so I guess I’m moving into the intermediate category?

  129. KeriCan May 7, 2015 at 7:15 pm #

I’m ready to teach my kiddos!

  130. Margo May 7, 2015 at 7:27 pm #

Wow…ummmm…. well when it comes to quilting I would say intermediate. Simply clothing – experienced. When my kids were little I did the t-shirts and pants and the like, but it has been years since I’ve done that! Now…strictly quilting and little gifts for babies… Love the family photo! What a nice family! Thank you as well for the chance to win your book! I have two adult girls that know very little about sewing! It would be a great reference book for them..after all, they don’t want to “listen” to Mom, but they would certainly want to borrow the book!

  131. Ramona May 7, 2015 at 7:38 pm #

I love to sew and would love to teach people to sew especially kids. I want to hook them young on a hobby that you can do for years! Your book looks so awesome!

  132. Kristy (@hopefulthreads) May 7, 2015 at 7:39 pm #

Ok, first….LOVE those cookies!!!! :) As for sewing, I love to teach others to sew! Your book looks awesome too, thanks for the chance!

  133. Amanda | mucho xoxo May 7, 2015 at 7:48 pm #

I’m probably somewhere in between. I’ve taught some of my friends a few things, but I know I still have a lot to learn. Looking forward to continuing to learn, and pass it on!

  134. Allison C May 7, 2015 at 7:59 pm #

I have some skills, but I would put my level more on the beginner side of the spectrum

  135. EmilyRC May 7, 2015 at 8:15 pm #

I would love to win this book – my best friend wants me to teach her how to sew and her personality/creative approach is completely different from mine! Congrats on the award!

  136. Crystal May 7, 2015 at 8:27 pm #

I would still consider myself a beginner sewer even though I have been sewing for 15 years and have a ton of projects under my belt.

  137. Doris McCarty May 7, 2015 at 8:40 pm #

I’m kind of a middle sewer. I do pretty good but there’s always more to learn.

  138. Ari May 7, 2015 at 8:57 pm #

I’m a beginer but I’m always willing to teach what I know!

  139. stacy alfano May 7, 2015 at 9:30 pm #

I feel like I’m in between!

  140. Diane May 7, 2015 at 9:35 pm #

I’m a beginner. Would love to win your book. Thanks for the chance!

  141. Sarah May 7, 2015 at 9:46 pm #

All my friends want me to teach them! I already teach middle schoolers as my profession, so it can’t be that hard, right?

  142. Amanda May 7, 2015 at 9:57 pm #

Beginner-ish… well a little closer to intermediate. But I don’t have anyone to teach! Someday I’ll teach my daughter :)

  143. Renea May 7, 2015 at 9:58 pm #

I like teaching my family to sew. I help my friends learn to quilt. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  144. mbiswell May 7, 2015 at 11:35 pm #

I’ve been sewing for about 30yrs now and even though people ask me questions about sewing, I still class myself as a novice – I’m not confident in my skill!

  145. Dita Bybee May 8, 2015 at 12:48 am #

I’m an adventurous beginner! So if the opportunity comes for me to teach someone beginning sewing project, I will gladly do my best to help!

  146. Danijela May 8, 2015 at 2:56 am #

Beginner here!=p) Wow,your skills are amazing.Lovely giveaway,so generous of you.Have a great weekend with your family.

  147. Dawn Jones May 8, 2015 at 7:58 am #

I am a beginner for sure.

  148. Linda May 8, 2015 at 9:07 am #

I think I fall somewhere in the middle. I love to sew but know I still have a lot to learn. Thanks for the chance to win such an awesome prize.

  149. Liesel May 8, 2015 at 9:25 am #

I would love a copy of this book!! I don’t know…I’d consider myself a beginner, but I’ve been sewing for several years…there’s just so much to learn!!!

  150. mary May 8, 2015 at 10:16 am #

I’m usually the one that people ask sewing questions, but I’m such a trial and error sewer that I tend not to have a good answer. Ha!
    Thanks for the chance!

  151. withinaquarterinch May 8, 2015 at 10:51 am #

I am usually the one telling other people what to do… maybe not just about quilting…

  152. Nicole Sender May 8, 2015 at 11:48 am #

I’d say I’m an intermediate sewer. I am able to teach basic skills to others!

  153. dawn - mi rincón de mariposas May 8, 2015 at 11:55 am #

I’m a fan of easy sewing, although I’ve been sewing for years and my skills have improved quite much. I love to help other people who want to start to sew, and that’s why I have a blog (where I show what I do, I usually post my tutorials and patterns too): It’s in Spanish, but there’s a google-translate gadget on the left side in case you’re interested in taking a look :)
    Thanks for the giveaway :)

  154. Kira Headlee May 8, 2015 at 12:10 pm #

Beginner. There’s so much to learn that I think I’ll consider myself one for years to come, no matter how many awesome projects or garments I complete, hahah.

  155. cherie May 8, 2015 at 1:58 pm #

beginner for sure but want to learn everything i can to be able to pass the knowledge onto my daughter, i can remember my mother sewing clothes for me as a child but sadly she passed away from cancer when i was 10 and never taught me

  156. Alex May 8, 2015 at 2:17 pm #

I am definitely a teacher. I love enabling others!

  157. Sumi May 8, 2015 at 2:22 pm #

I am a beginning sewer but trying to improve. I am completely self-taught so I am always looking to expand my knowledge.

  158. Ronnie G May 8, 2015 at 2:24 pm #

I have been trying to teach my children to sew for years. I think it is like when they learned to drive – something best left to a professional. If I had your book, I could let them learn and help when needed. thanks

  159. Jyothi Saravu May 8, 2015 at 3:15 pm #

    I am a beginner… sewing from almost a year.

  160. Trish Herbers May 8, 2015 at 3:17 pm #

When it comes to quilting, I can be the teacher. For garment and bag sewing, I am definitely the student. I heard you on the AQS podcast with Pat Sloan, and your book sounds wonderful!

  161. Victoria Thwaites May 8, 2015 at 3:38 pm #

Still feel quite a novice but I have helped friends.

  162. Hayley May 8, 2015 at 4:10 pm #

Oh I would say I am definitely at the beginner end of the spectrum! Congrats on the success of your book

  163. emme May 8, 2015 at 5:31 pm #

i consider myself an advanced beginner

  164. Kate Yates May 8, 2015 at 6:28 pm #

Great question! I am definitely a beginner, and there is so much out there to learn! I used to be a teacher, and now work as a trainer, so I do like teaching others what I’ve learned so far–and would love to teach more of my friends and family about sewing.

  165. Andrea C May 8, 2015 at 6:39 pm #

I’m an advanced beginner. I’m learning new things but knew the basics of how to follow a pattern etc. already.

  166. Sue Holman May 8, 2015 at 7:12 pm #

I would love to help others learn so that they can love the art of creating!

  167. Kathy h May 8, 2015 at 7:26 pm #

I enjoy helping others learn to quilt. I am not perfect or an expert but enjoy the quilts I make.

  168. tawnykw May 8, 2015 at 7:32 pm #

I have been sewing for 20+ years and was taught by my mom. I’m so surprised now that people come up to me and ask if I will teach them to sew. It’s awesome and a little intimidating. :)

  169. Laura May 8, 2015 at 7:54 pm #

I’m intermediate to experienced and am very happy to share what I know.

  170. My Pieced Life May 8, 2015 at 8:06 pm #

I would say that I am an advanced beginner. I am fearful of curves and struggle making totes & bags. Thanks for the chance to win!

  171. auschick May 8, 2015 at 8:11 pm #

I’m actually a bit of both. I’ve been sewing for a few decades now, but I’m always learning something new and improving my skills. I have enjoy teaching it too :)

  172. JoNell May 8, 2015 at 8:13 pm #

Teaching my teenage neighbor to make quilts.

  173. Mia J May 8, 2015 at 8:34 pm #

I am a total beginner so would like to learn as much as I can. Thanks for the giveaway.

  174. Lisa May 8, 2015 at 8:42 pm #

My mom taught me how to use the sewing machine when I was 8 and I’ve never looked back! I’m definitely more the teacher these days, although I still learn something with just about every project.

  175. Rebecca May 8, 2015 at 8:56 pm #

I’m definitely still in the beginner camp but I’m getting more confident!

  176. jenetamasson May 8, 2015 at 9:27 pm #

I love to teach others, though I wouldn’t describe myself as being an expert. My 11 year old daughter’s friends love to come over and sew cushion covers, zippered pouches and other small projects. It’s fun to teach them (as well as my own kids!).

  177. Nikita Smith May 8, 2015 at 10:05 pm #

Hmmm I’d say somewhere in between..I know my around the machine but I am still learning alot of tricks and techniques myself.

  178. 64colorbox May 8, 2015 at 10:20 pm #

I don’s consider myself a beginner, but neither do I have any desire to teach or help people with their sewing skills. I’m very selfish and keep my sewing hobby to myself. Though I don’t mind posting a tutorial on my blog now and again.

  179. Cassandra May 8, 2015 at 10:30 pm #

I have been sewing for as long as I can remember, and I have taught many people how to sew. At times I have taught several college level courses on theatre costume construction, so I am always looking for good books to recommend to my students!

  180. Carrie Hare May 8, 2015 at 10:55 pm #

I’ve been sewing since my mom got me lessons when I was 10!c

  181. Leanne May 8, 2015 at 11:06 pm #

Thanks for opening this up to international entries, even if it was in error! I would say I am an intermediate sewist, but this book would be perfect for me to help teach my daughters how to sew. Thanks for the chance to win a copy.

  182. Peggy Phillips May 9, 2015 at 12:35 am #

Hi – I think I’m a little of both. I feel like I am constantly learning new techniques, but I love to show people the basics. Thank you

  183. paulineperry65 May 9, 2015 at 2:17 am #

I have been sewing for 62 years and I love it. I am teaching my 10 yr old granddaughter to sew and this book would be helpful I am sure

  184. Barbara O. May 9, 2015 at 3:58 am #

I’m neither a beginner nor a teacher, I just find my craft relaxing and like improving for my own results. Thanks for the chance!

  185. Trish May 9, 2015 at 7:58 am #

I’ve been sewing for a while and I still feel like a beginner!!

  186. Calah Hansen May 9, 2015 at 8:04 am #

  187. Michelle Smith May 9, 2015 at 8:20 am #

I want to teach everyone how to sew! My 9 year old son and 20 year old step daughter have both expressed an interest. I plan on getting a low end brother sewing machine for them to learn on.

    detroitgirl77 AT gmail DOT com

  188. Mich May 9, 2015 at 9:49 am #

Hi Shea, and congratulations on the award for your book. What a terrific idea! I consider myself more of an experienced sewist, because I’ve sewn garments and home dec projects since I was a teen. But I’m also a novice – quilter, that is. I know about your pattern design skills from Mod Block. Small world, really. Thanks for offering this giveaway.

  189. Veronika May 9, 2015 at 12:10 pm #

I’m a beginner, but slowly getting into the intermediate zone. So maybe in about five more years :)

  190. karenbolan May 9, 2015 at 1:33 pm #

I would love to teach everyone to sew! I think I might be able to call myself intermediate by now.

  191. Ginrei May 9, 2015 at 1:43 pm #

I’m kind of in the middle ground??

  192. Jess May 9, 2015 at 1:53 pm #

I’m teaching the S.O., which is hard, because I’ve never taught anyone before and it’s one thing to know how to do something but another to know how to teach it!

  193. abina8 May 9, 2015 at 1:59 pm #

I’m more on the teaching others side. I’ve been sewing since I was 6 or so.

  194. Patty D May 9, 2015 at 2:08 pm #

Congrats on the award. I’d love to write a book some day

  195. Sarah May 9, 2015 at 2:55 pm #

I want to teach everyone how to sew!

  196. sogalthoughts May 9, 2015 at 3:00 pm #

I’ve taught a few friends and family to sew!

  197. Jake May 9, 2015 at 3:35 pm #

Medium beginner I guess…..but def the enthusiastic type that wants to teach everyone else to love it too!

  198. Lee May 9, 2015 at 3:44 pm #

Thank you – I like to teach:) My daughter and friend would love this book!

  199. Katherine May 9, 2015 at 4:41 pm #

I’m an intermediate sewer who happily encourages others to try their hand sewing. I’d like to know how to best teach others. Your book sounds wonderful.

  200. jeifner May 9, 2015 at 5:50 pm #

I really like teaching people how to sew and now teach a getting to know your basic machine class at out LQS

  201. mummywantedtobe May 9, 2015 at 6:49 pm #

I am only the beginner.. :)

  202. Sarah B May 9, 2015 at 7:02 pm #

I am a beginner and self taught so when someone says they can’t sew I immediately jump in to try and teach them.

  203. Laura F. May 9, 2015 at 8:32 pm #

I am definitely a beginner sewist. I would love to win a copy of your book.

  204. Ferdal May 9, 2015 at 8:43 pm #

I would love to win this prize – I recently bought my first sewing machine and am really excited to learn as much as I can quickly!

  205. alicicicia May 9, 2015 at 8:54 pm #

I listened to your APQ podcast interview and was a little bit on the fence as to which side I identify with more–I’m pretty confident about some stuff but still have a lot to learn! Either way, I’m super excited about your book and would love to pick it up here. Thanks for the giveaway and for sharing you work!

  206. Fran May 9, 2015 at 11:18 pm #

I identify more as a beginner sewist- I have been quilting for just over 3 years but I’m self taught (or more correctly blog taught) & haven’t ever been taught the basics of sewing. Thanks for the chance to win your fantastic book!

  207. Debby May 10, 2015 at 12:50 am #

    I am a new/beginner sewer.

  208. Susan Ikin May 10, 2015 at 4:18 am #

I am not a beginner, but did not sew for a while, so need to relearn some skills.

  209. Tamie May 10, 2015 at 5:44 am #

I’m comfortable sewing quilts but three dimensional sewing- not so much.

  210. sarah May 10, 2015 at 10:39 am #

Definitely more of a beginning sewer in terms of confidence, but I’m 5 years in and am beginning to understand pattern construction and more complicated techniques. So somewhere in the middle :) Happy spring to you!

  211. Irina May 10, 2015 at 11:01 am #

I think I am in between…! If there is something I master, I love to teach it. If I’m still learning, I can learn along with someone else…sharing is caring…!

  212. Erin May 10, 2015 at 12:37 pm #

I identify mostly with being someone who wants to teach, but, it totally depends on what part of sewing I’m teaching, if you know what I mean!

  213. Melanie C May 10, 2015 at 1:05 pm #

I’ve been quilting for a few years, but want to start making clothing and bags with zippers :)

  214. Anke May 10, 2015 at 1:08 pm #

I did some nice projects so far but still would see me more on the beginner side than on the teachers side – not learned enough yet!

  215. Ariel May 10, 2015 at 1:19 pm #

Thanks for a fabulous giveaway! I’m kind of somewhere in between – if I have friends that have zero experience with sewing then I’m all about wanting to share the love but anything beyond that and I get nervous :)

  216. nancysue May 10, 2015 at 2:34 pm #

I’m a hybrid of beginner/teacher. I am a homeschooling mom, so am also teaching my 7 yr old son… trying to keep one step ahead…. good problem to have :) Thank you for participating in the blog hop :)

  217. Judy Cooper May 10, 2015 at 2:35 pm #

    I’m not a beginner sewer.

  218. Kristy May 10, 2015 at 3:52 pm #

I definitely fall more on the side of wanting to teach others and get them just as excited about sewing as I am!

  219. Leisa May 10, 2015 at 4:44 pm #

Both still learning and love teaching. :)

  220. Catrin Lewis May 10, 2015 at 4:48 pm #

Despite sewing for around twenty years I would still call myself a beginner – So many things to learn!

  221. Alexis May 10, 2015 at 4:53 pm #

I feel like I’m right in the middle, but definitely more beginner than professional. I still have a lot to learn.

  222. kittywilkin May 10, 2015 at 6:48 pm #

I think I’m right in the middle. I still consider myself fairly beginner, but I love it so much that I want to teach all of my friends and family how to sew, too. I secretly want a whole guild of quilters right here in rural Maine! May as well start with my friends, right?! I would LOVE this book since I’m mostly self-taught but would love to know the proper methods, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I win!

  223. Bonnie May 10, 2015 at 6:56 pm #

I love to teach family and friends.

  224. Nesta May 10, 2015 at 7:54 pm #

I will always be the beginner sewist because I think there is always something to learn!

  225. sweetandsaltydesigns May 10, 2015 at 8:14 pm #

I keep trying to get my friends and family interested. It’s a work in progress!

  226. Stacy May 10, 2015 at 9:17 pm #

I am an advanced beginner and I love to sew.

  227. Mom C May 10, 2015 at 9:51 pm #

I’m on the teaching side. I love to help others learn the joy of sewing. I would use your book! Thanks.

  228. Ellee May 16, 2015 at 5:05 am #

I’m a little bit of both. I’m always looking to learn more and I like to introduce others to the joys of sewing.

  229. gayferland May 16, 2015 at 5:34 am #

I consider myself as an intermediate sewer. I also find myself beginner on different patterns. I have been sewing for over 40 years and love challenges!!!

  230. Zosia Koehler May 16, 2015 at 10:50 am #

I would love to be able to teach friends and family to sew! I would love to have your book your blog is great!

  231. Erica Arndt May 18, 2015 at 1:10 am #

How fun! I’m a beginning quilter and also lead a girls group with my daughters and their friends so it would be so fun to go through this book with the girls and their mamas!

  232. Cindi May 21, 2015 at 11:56 am #

I Love to sew and it is not a good day for me if I do not get to my sewing room! When I recently discussed quilting with a friend a gentlemen over heard me and said ” Isn’t sewing and quilting a dying art and my response was It’s a 4 Billion Dollar Industry”! Well you should have seen his reaction! Speechless!!!! I have just found your site and am excited to discover all you have to offer! My biggest Hope and Dream is to inspire my Daughter to learn to Sew!

  233. Beth Huggins, Angle Vale South Australia May 26, 2015 at 12:53 am #

I’m an inbetween sewer, I have done some sewing and quilting, but fully realise that I have so much more to learn. I do help others in our Quilters group with both projects and techniques for a wide variety of sewing and quilting projects.

  234. Sandy May 29, 2015 at 4:25 pm #

I would say I’m more of a beginner, I’ve only been quilting about a year & a half. My sister in law is my teacher shes been quilting for many years.

  235. Carolyn June 11, 2015 at 12:15 pm #

Not a beginner, but there is always something new to learn and improve on. I am teaching my 9 year old niece to sew.

  236. Christi P July 15, 2015 at 8:44 pm #

I feel like I am somewhere inbetween! I am not a beginner, I want everyone that I know to sew, but not cofident enough that I could teach them. It is a wonderful hobby and I am so thankful that I had a friend to encourage me!

  237. JEB O'Barr December 16, 2015 at 2:32 pm #

My 22 year old daughter is the age I learner to sew. Now that she’s become interested I would like the book for her.

  238. Lisa Mathis January 14, 2016 at 1:45 pm #

I’m having trouble entering so I apologize if this comes through more than once! I’m in between a beginner and fairly knowledgable sewer always looking for ways to stretch my understanding and skill. I’m a homeschool mom looking to start a 6th-8th grade sewing group based on your book. To be chosen to receive your book would be a blessing! Thank you so much!

  239. Ann April 28, 2016 at 4:06 pm #

I’m an intermediate sewer, I think. I have 9 children, six of whom are daughters. The first 3 know how to sew but don’t have a passion for it yet. I can only hope for the next three….but then again, I might have to share my sewing machine! ;)
